Tales From The Hood: Philly Edition
Showdown on Hurley Street Events on what may be the city’s worst block provide a stark glimpse into a Philly many Philadelphians never see. One former resident survived to tell the tale.

Few people on Hurley work. Most live on supplemental security income or welfare, or share in some kind of black-market revenue. People hang out 24/7. On Hurley Street, one family’s drama is every family’s drama. In fact drama may be the only thing on Hurley that’s not in short supply.
Interesting true story of what takes place in the hood. There is so much hate and ignorance in the hood, people rather stab their neighbor in the back then give them a hand. The kids growing up in this neighborhood will just continue the cycle of self destruction.

Shit is real, niggas trying to hard…. We really need to do better… We out killing ourselves for bullshit. How bout trying to find ways to get out the hood then trying to prove something. Get money thats the bottom line, if more niggas is getting murder then is making money, you need another career that shit just aint poppin no more!

As a Philadelphian who doesn’t live in the “hood”, I feel like I’m immune to the serious violence thats going on in the city. The writer was right when the media only reports that “a teen was shot in north philly” and they doesn’t go into detail at all. Making people like me feel like, “oh boy its another shooting” I thought that the article was a great read and Im glad that RealTalkNY posted it. We all need to read it.

Nah # 1 your wrong…the motto is already “get money”…that’s why stories like this are so common…the motto needs to be “get education”…the foundation that education provides can’t be matched by get money by any means…I’m speaking from my own personal experience

THIS IS ONE HELL OF A STORY. ITS F*#KED UP THE MAYOR OF Philadelphia and his office, do not even attempt to stop this madness. Cops act as if nothing like this happens. I’ve been to parts in philly that are clean and safe but when it comes to the minority neighborhood (blacks and hispanics) the city doesn’t care, I guess to them it’s better for us to kill ourselves. But eventually this madness will spread thru-out philly and other high crime neighborhoods thru-out america into the good neighborhoods. That’s when the authoritys will take action. Shit is getting bad through out america. Because the goverment doesn’t care and letting crimes escalate. I live in NYC. I love it here. I remember before Giulianai was the mayor crime rates were high and the city was dirty graffiti everwhere. I still oppose everytime he defended cops who would violate poeple civil rights. etc. But his goal to make NYC A SAFER AND CLEANER CITY I applaud. It use to be scary entering nyc either thru ” new jersey, long island and whiteplains”. I remember I use to go down south and wished I lived down there but now the south is turning into a madhouse. NYC has been REBORN. The reason is because the mayor and the city goverment refuse to let crime once again takeover NYC, lIKE IT DID IN THE 70′S AND 80′S. NYC is still a tough place do not get it “TWISTED” one bit. But now people have more sense. I don’t give the cops the credit. I give the credit to city goverment “the mayors office” for putting the pressure on the nypd. Because without no one overlooking the crime rates, these cops would just be in there cruisers chilling. And this is not to bad mouth cops. Because they only doing what there superiors “police brass” want them to due. Orders which come from mayors office and goverment. The same safety goals and measures should be put into effect. thru out America where crime is surpassing historic numbers.
Whats going on in philly many parts of pennsylvannia and thru-out america is because your local goverment is not taking the necessary steps. Don’t say it’s because the state and the goverment is not funding yall properly. All it takes is more responsability from those in charge and who are tired off crime running there citys.
It’s not always the people fault that they live in these situations. Living in places like this can get you killed just for speaking to cops, many live in fear and know that if they would call the cops there will be reprucussions to them and their family.
These bad seeds who mess it up for the rest off the good people should be taken out off the streets and given really hard sentences. How can you easily due life having a kilo of coke but can kill somebody and be free within 15 years. the law has to really punish those who really need to be punished harshly, so people can see that killing people, robbing people, hurting people will not be taken lightly.
To show others that you can’t do what you want and get away with it. This would make people aware to think twice before they would overeact.
If america can punish and sanctions countries who refuse to follow suit the same should be done to many city goverments in America. RESPONSABILITY AND ACCOUNTAILITY COMES FROM ABOVE. AND WHO IS ABOVE US? THE American Goverment.

THATS NOT A WAR ZONE THAT’S LIKE LIVING IN A JAIL. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND JUST DEFENDING YOURSELF CAN GET YOU FATALY HURT. There will be lots of ignorant people posting they commenst. Many will disagree with what I wrote. But if you read not just read but understand what I’m saying you would comprehend and posibly agree with what I’m saying. It’s our local city goverments who have failed us. How can we be held responsible for something we didn’t start and can handle. We dodn’t have the diplomacy to talk to state goverments nor due we have the means to be able to looby at washington dc for more protection for our cities.

Man this is a sad story and too true in too many places! We value ignorance too much its cool to be tough and stand up but stand up for somethin more than a bundle! The mother is the problem to me it usually starts with the parents, and with a bunch of responsibility dodgers havin kids the issue gets compounded every 5-10 years. We got grandmothers more worried about being milf quality rather than being a respectable mother or grandmother with somethin of value to offer her offspring. Dudes is the same 50 yrs old fightin wit 16yr olds over who can sell some peices on the block.

this I a very sad but also a very true story. just how them rappers be sayin real talk. it does not get any realer than this. we definatly need more detail than when the news says ybm shot. but they can give all the details on paris hilton, and the other rich white kids who couldn’t survive 5 min in these kind of environments. 100

Ask any resident of “Da Bottom,” West Philadelphia how living in the slums is and they honestly don’t realize they are living in a slum. Many do not know because they have lived there entire life like this. it sad but true.
