Should A Record Label Be Liable For A Rapper’s Actions?

The guy that got stomped by Busta Rhymes a few months back is now including Busta’s record label in the lawsuit. According to MTV:

The suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from Rhymes (real name: Trevor Smith), all nine of his bodyguards, and the record labels Interscope Geffen A&M, Universal Music Group Recordings and Aftermath Entertainment. It posits that Rhymes’ actions against his client were directly triggered by the rapper’s persona, which the papers claim was “designed for publicity, marketing and profit purposes to be rogue, rude, aggressive, misbehaving, challenging, confrontational, disrespectful and, at times, criminal.” The suit later claims the record labels “utilized the unlawful and illegal behavior and promoted the image created as part of its marketing campaign” for all things Busta: records, concerts and merchandise.

This is an interesting issue, companies are sometimes responsible for their employees’ behavior in certain situations. In this case I don’t feel the record label is at fault though. Maybe if it was at a video shoot or in one of their buildings he would have a point.

Thoughts?

I could see a record lable taking “some” responsibility, because that way an artist would be aware of his/her action more and would think twice before doing some dumb shit. I dont know what kind of action a lable would take tho. And at the same time, most of these artist are grown men so they have to smartin up. But you never know what really happened in this case.

i agree with realtalkny on dis one…how is the record label reliable for what dis grown ass man did??

if tha situation was different then maybe

  8. AL MONEY Says:

WHY SHOULD LABELS BE RESPONSIBLE….THE MOST THEY CAN DO IS TALK TO THE ARTIST..THEY NOT GONNA FOLLOW THEM AND TELL THEM HOW TO ACT..IF BUSTA WANNA GO AROUND BEATING ON PEOPLE, NO ONE AT THE LABEL CAN STOP HIM…THE MOST THEY CAN DO IS LET HIM GO IF THEY DON’T WANT NO DRAMA..PEOPLE JUST WANT AN EXCUSE TO GET MORE MONEY..
