Virginia Tech Continues According To Plans While A Nas Show In Canada Is Cancelled
The Virginia Tech community has not altered their original plans for their upcoming school concert designed to celebrate the strength and resiliency of the community. As a result of the complaints of some concerned parents about the concert, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly was spearheading a movement this past week concentrating on the removal of Nas from the list of performers scheduled for A Concert for Virginia Tech that is taking place on September 6th. This is not the first time that O’Reilly has orchestrated and incited reactions to rap artists because of the lyrical content of their music. He was very instrumental on applying pressure on Pepsi due to having rapper Ludacris on some of their advertisements. However, Paris Hilton, America’s favorite princess and socialite, does not and never received the same amount of backlash as rap artists for appearing in a sexually charged Carl’s Jr burger commercial.

For individuals such as O’Reilly who are greatly concerned with the deterioration of American culture, an incident like Paris Hilton’s sexually explicit ad should deserve more outrage because rap artists are not performing or reciting their explicit lyrics in these mainstream ads. Instead, their image becomes a little more refined in public mainstream audience.
The anti-Nas movement that has been brewing is solely based on the cherry-picking of lyrics without examining the whole facet of an artist’s music. However, an individual such as Bill O’Reilly is not worried about the whole collective body of work from an artist instead a sole focus on elements of Nas’ music that would instead further benefit his argument. However, the Virginia Tech community recognizes Nas’ various collection of songs, and he has more to offer than the lyrics of “Made You Look”. In addition to the arrangements that are going to be made before the performance, one can assume that a bright emcee like Nas would be conscious of the tragic circumstances surrounding the Virginia Tech community.

A Nas scheduled appearance in Canada was cancelled due to the venue saying his lyrics promote gun violence. According the CBC:
Student groups at Carleton and the University of Ottawa had booked Nas, a popular New York rapper, to perform at Rock the Vote at the Ottawa Congress Centre on Oct. 1, leading up to the Oct. 10 election.
Cockburn added that on Monday, the students received a phone call from the centre’s vice-president of client services, Paul Keogh, who said the internal policy was not the reason for the problem, but that Nas’s lyrics promote gun violence.

Comparing Paris’ ad to Nas’ lyrics isn’t the issue here. The problem is that Bill is a racist who just because he has a bit of media leverage he thinks that he can hi-jack the event because he doesn’t like rap music. He’s doing this because he wants to be on Oprah again. If rappers had any sense at all they would wake up to this threat. Bill is basically beefin with every rapper out there. I hope 50, Kanye, Jay-Z or Nas address him in a way they know best and thats with a diss track. Maybe a ‘Piggy Bank’ remix. LOL

Although I agree Virginia Tech is probably not a good venue for any rapper who talks about the streets.It was wrong of Bill Oreilly to talk about Nas like he doesnt say some good positive things.That is missrepresenting a person and Oreily is wrong.

I say f*ck Bill O’reily — Im from Montreal, Canada and Nas already came to montreal as much as 50 & Jay did. — I say f*ck Bill O’reily — Ottawa is one of the most strict and boring cities in Canada and since it’s the capital, they wont let anybody come and do shows. Young Buck was cancelled twice due to his criminal record. If Nas’s show was cancelled, i’m sure its an issue way WAY dumber than that. I say f*ck Bill O’reily — The V.tech performance is a good idea if you see it as “improved hypocrisy” of the WHITE MAN but if I was Nas, I wouldnt have said yes to that. He’s a very inspiring artist but…that…I wonder.
I’m sure not a lot of rappers would have said yes to that.
