Can Papoose Convert His Mixtape Buzz Into Mainstream Success?
Can mixtape buzz ever lead to mainstream success? Papoose has taken over the Mixtape scene over the last few years but that kind of success doesn’t usually carry over to selling records when you get a deal. I remember 50 Cent & Fabolous back in the days were hitting the mixtapes hard and things worked out for them, but I haven’t seen it happen since, in NY at least. I wasn’t really feeling Pap at first, but then I seen him perform alphabetical slaughter live and seen the man has skills. What are your thoughts, is Papoose nice and will he ever blow up?

July 8th, 2007 at 5:42 pm
Yea the Papster is nice lyrically but it takes more than that, i don’t know if Papoose have the personality and charisma.
But besides that, RealTalkNY can you post something talking bout Tupac’s mother’s house being burned down.

Pap does have some talent but he is overrated, yes he can put together a mixtape but so can dipset,he got a mill outa a deal…so did 50 and yet there is nothing coming out of him,in my opinion he can never be mainstream he has nothing to market or any type of swagger but he is the spelling bee champ
July 8th, 2007 at 5:47 pm
Pap is cool , he can spit mos def but . I dont know about actually being able to sell records outside of New York . I think they know its going to be tough for him , usually when that happens you get people reaching on there cd to sell in another market ( some dumb ass a&r in his ear ) . Like fabolous with that diamonds in my damn chain nonsense . That was a obvious reach !!! I think paps best bet is just to do him . We luv him in NY if he just keep putting out hot shit everybody else will eventually follow suit .
July 8th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Yeah Pap is nice as fuck, but I dont see him being capable of mass appeal…Its sad but true….
-His delivery comes off as a mix-tape dude. Look at can-i-bus…lyrically he gets the job done, but as much as good lyrics are needed in the game, its not all that counts. You definitly need a mean swaggar and a unique voice to pull it off. But I hope he does blow cuz that P.O.W. shit was crazy.
July 8th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
pap iz nice but i cant see him mainstream cause he dont have dat catchy sound dat da kidz like lol
and 4 some reason kay slay gets more annoyin every time i see hiz ass
July 8th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Pap is cool but i be feelin sometimes on his songs he tries to get 2 lyrical, like he says stuff he don’t even understand. Hes not a punchline rapper,ad libber, He dosent have any swagger at all. He nice but will never blow
July 8th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
dat nigga pap goin push units no doubt about it…… its just goin be hard for him to blow in the mainstream…… bcuz the game is way beyond fuck right now… most of the radios is not gonna play PAP as much as these other corny rap niggas….. i mean the radios goin play PAP prolly once a day, unlike these other corny rap niggas whos gettin airplay like every hour…..most of the fans already got their head brainwash because of the nonstop bullshit thats out there everyday….. i mean u might not like what your hearin out there, but its there 24/7, so as the day goes by, ur slowly but surely adapting to bullshit…….. Im not gonna front theres days that i find myself bumpin my head to some nonsense then I realize “what the fuck is happenin???, why am I bumpin to these bullshit?!?!” it is what it is, and no matter how hard we try, we are surrounded by no talent, bubble gum ass artist…… but on the real PAP will get his gwop regardless…… and if u dont agree wit what im tryin to say, then i guess ur assed out, POINT BLANK PERIOD.
July 8th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
LYRICAlLY=YES
SWAGG=NO
DELIVERY=NO,SAME ON EVERY SONG
TALENT HE HAS..
BUT CREATING A SONG…
HE DOESN’T REALLY POSSES THAT ABILITY YET..
THAS WHY HE HAS DONE SO MANY MIXTAPES…
SO HE CAN UP HIS GAME B4 GOING MAINSTREAM…
BUT FROM THA LOOKS OF IT..
I DONT THINK IT HAS WORKED..
July 8th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Papoose is lyrically a beast……….but i really think if he was gonna drop his album……….it should have been right after the “Get Low” remix……cause his buzz was at a alltime high…..but if he does drop he defintely got a large group of followers that will support him….wish him the best tho!

July 8th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
He will NEVER sell. NEVER, FUCKING NEVER!
July 8th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
why does him going mainstream matter? papoose is dope as hell. let me ask everyone..is 50 better to you now(mainstream) or is mixtape 50 better? some people can go pop some can’t. how many records you sell doesn’t validate any artist for me. is dr. dre any more of a producer cuz he made a song for gwen stefani? if so to you then you need to leave your comments on vh1.com or something. i don’t care if he ever gets his video on mtv, he’s ill and the streets know it.
July 8th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
i dont care if hes a mixtape artist all his life, just keep pumping out the quality music
July 8th, 2007 at 7:17 pm
DAT NIKKA NICE FUK ALL YA HATAZ
July 8th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Papoose is the reason why hip hop headed down south. BORING. the bottom line is, he ain’t doing nothing that ain’t done before.
July 8th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Pap is nice lyrically. Plus he from Bed-Stuy and I’m from Bed-Stuy so u know i got 2 support. His freestyles aee fire but I haven’t heard a song for the mainstream yet. I think that he can do it. Some rappers can’t make the transition but I think he can.
July 8th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Cosign #11- Good point. The only thing is, when you know sombody is dope, you want everybody to see it and at least respect it for what it is..I get mad as fuck when wack rappers get shine and the illest niggas stay gettin pushed to the back, but at the end of the day itsn all buisness.

mixtape rappers r just wat te title says -mixtape rappers sellin millions dont mak eu ne better of a rapper just more marketable 50 sells alott n he cant hold a candle to alotta niggas in da game rap wise but hes a businman n marketable white america espically likes em good back story n hipho pis bought by 70 percent white people believe it or not thats right 70 percent of rap is bought -not consumed but bought n thats the keyword bought =money n the world revolves around money
July 8th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
pap is nice but his voice is annoyin. consederin tha state of tha game today, i am a little skeptical bout a lyricist being successful. unless he come up wit snap music or laffy taffy shit
July 8th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
plus the whole digital music fuked the music industys sales up so its hard to compare sales today from 2003 n earlier ether way i dont care if he sells 2 copies or 2 millions he n alotta other people that dont sell or flop as some like to say r stil nice but then again if u bein real with yaself u cant take nothin away from rappers that sell if if they r garbage they still gewttin guap but selin is another notch on a rappers belt only rappers in my top 10 that never really sold r jadakiss n big l but l passed early so theres no tellin n jada although it took em a minute he went 1x plat so pushing units is def accomplishment to add to a trophy case but has nothin to do wit skill so please stop bringin up album sales wen talkin bout who is theee nicest
July 8th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
yo gro mainstream matters cuz das how u get paid, who the fuck u know gettin paid off a mixtape except dj drama,if mixtapes is the case hella niggas would push they demos n say fuck labels
July 8th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
nice nice… biggups pap
July 8th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
I don’t like Pap personally. I don’t see him having a big impact.
July 8th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
I agree with much of what has already been said in this thread, particularly Omega Blaze’s breakdown. Papoose is very talented, but his technical prowess (you can’t configure me/lyrical wizadry … blah, blah, blah) has never captured my attention like that. I respect his grind though.
I believe that he, and most rappers from New York City, have suffered artistically due in large part to the culture of mixtapes … or at least how we approach them here. Why? Because we place so much emphasis on lyrics alone that many of our best and brightest from the mixtape circuit have no idea of how to make a cohesive and listenable song. Mixtapes have been great for giving new artists exposure, but they don’t usually produce anybody (with the exception of 50 Cent) who can make an entire album of good music. Who remembers Shellz? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Sure complex lyrics are great, but that’s like a basketball player that’s all handle and no jumpshot … you end up being a 1 trick pony. 99% of New York City mixtape rappers cannot make hooks (thereby making them incapable of really making great songs) and are convinced that only tired punchlines matter.
Papoose’s buzz isn’t even there like that anymore. It may seem like that because DJ Kay Slay plays his music every chance that he gets, but nobody outside of that really cares. Papoose desperately lacks the charisma to elicit any real interest in anything that he does.
Don’t get it fukked up, I was born and bred on lyrics and I still push that with my own music, but this is entertainment and you must be a well rounded artist in order to make an impact on the market, particularly now, when album sales are so hard to come by.

Number 8 and 23 is right on the money. I’ve been saying for maybe four years now that he’s never going to be anything beyond a mixtape rapper. He isn’t marketable for shit. His delivery is boring and annoying and he lacks personality.
Isn’t he signed to Jive? Bet Budden, Jae Millz AND Saigon come out with an album before Nacirema Dream ever drops too. lol.
@ Number 11, you can’t really be that na?ve. The music business is just that, a business. You can be the hottest shit since Hov, but that doesn’t mean a damn thing if you can’t turn that into dollars. Because at the end of the day, that’s what its all about. For the label and the rapper. If it weren’t true, dude wouldve been giving away his shit for free.
most artists want to get signed for monetary reasons. If it wasn’t true then they would be giving away their music for free. Unless Pap plans on doing club shows in the NY tri state area ALONE,
July 8th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
he’s a mixtape rapper…i don’t think he will make it in mainstream …but that doesn’t he ain’t nice… he will continue to put that mixtape heat…..but he’s gettin that paper …1.5 mill in da bank! can’t hate on youn pap
July 8th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
I’ll keep it short and sweet since no one reads my posts anyway.
“What are your thoughts, is Papoose nice and will he ever blow up?”
No and No
July 9th, 2007 at 12:49 am
Pap is the Big L for our time. Lyrically he is killing every bar he spits and with tight productions ain’t nuthin stopping him from explode. Jus hope we won’t have to hear any of that Scott Storch-produced trash. Gimme some Preem, Buckwild, Pete Rock, Havoc, Alchemist or any other Tru-skool-producer.
July 9th, 2007 at 2:38 am
papoose can be good at times but mainly hes decent to me but he has no charisma no croosover appeal no swagg and has local lyrical content he has nothing about him that says star and that is why he will flop big time
July 9th, 2007 at 3:37 am
Papoose is nice lyrically as far as the underground shit goes, but if he wants notoriety and that real gwap, he gon’ have to cross over to mainstream. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has the appeal that mainstream outlets are looking for right now. Maybe if he continue to perfect his craft and stay on his grind, he’ll be buzzworthy and what the market would be looking for, in a few years. But, right now, I just cant see it.
July 9th, 2007 at 4:09 am
To everybody mad about us talking about is pap going to sell units . Where just answering the question that was asked . Can pap turn his mixtape buzz into maintstream success ? that all . I dont care if you sells one record personally son can rap . it dont take a genuis to figure that one out .

July 9th, 2007 at 5:46 am

July 9th, 2007 at 5:52 am
