Anyway, The light vs dark debate is so old now and it’s 2007 so it shouldn’t really be an issue. Unfortunately this is still a touchy subject and will probably never go away. However this is not just something that goes on among black folks. You can find these issues all over the world when it comes to people of color.
I truly believe Indians are in general the most colorstruck people in the world where they favor the lightskinned Indians and it’s actually accepted in their society. They even have commercials on TV where dark Indian women become light, happy and beautiful “thanks to” different products that make your skin lighter. Now that’s pretty scary. Imagine a commercial like that on BET..LOL
this issue goes back to slavery and how they sold our ancestors at the slave trading joints. also read some of the accounts written by our ancestors are slave during those times, and read the Willie LYnch letter.thats a good basis of understanding of this critical issue. our children goes thru this like we all did growing up, and some of til they die.. . .its time for us to set free our mind and soul for a true life altering transformations. therefore we can build our own standards deeply rooted to our culture.

Now I do agree that that mind set comes from years of conditioning through the media and society standards but at the end of the day it is what it is until society decides to change the criteria that most of us evaluate beauty on.

The real reason why being light is the ideal beauty in India is because of the influence of western society. India has only been an independent country for about 50 years. The British was in control of India for almost 200 years and many of their influences and values of beauty..etc are still a part of the Indian society whether they like to admit that or not.

I honestly don’t think it has to do with skin complexion. I am cooli complected (ex. Ananda Lewis, Chilli, Tatyana Ali) and when I tan in the summer I get dark. I get hit on by Asians, Blacks, Whites, Indians…etc, all the same. No one particular group approaches me more than the other. My moms is from Trinidad and my pops is from Calabria…so I have the best of both worlds between my parents. But, I was given a darker skin tone, and my hair is the mixture of both my parents. My sister is VERY fair and took after my dad in her complexion, but I even get more attention than she does.
I am just as dark as Kelly right now, but I was raised in a predominantly white neighborhood. And, while growing up I never experienced any prejudices due to being my complexion. So I think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, I don’t see how complexion plays a role in that. Unless maybe it was instilled in people’s heads that lighter was better. But, that never was the case with me…which leaves me to believe that people that hold their head high with confidence to those with low self self-esteem play a factor in attraction as well. Beauty is beauty to me and it comes in ALL shades.

Light skinned/dark skinned is something that we, blacks, need to get away from. I am very light skinned and I’ve noticed that I get jobs and other preferential treatment over my darker skinned friends. There’s nothing that can be done about that and when I was younger I actually bought in to the whole light skinned/dark skinned lie. Reality is, God created everyone in all different shades. I mean for REAL. No shade is better or prettier than the other. We have to stop looking at white america for our sense of self.

But, to me, I was taught, if you get darker than a brown paper bag in the summer after tanning you are dark. Amerie/Stacey Dash/Anonda Lewis/Chilli are all cooli complected…and I consider them ALL dark. Kelly is dark but is a different kind of dark because she is more chocolate complected, but she is still the same dark complexion as the aforementioned. NE ways…you people make a big deal out of complexions, because dark is dark and light is light…no in between. In the summer when I get away to my parent’s spot…I STAY at the beach baking/tanning in the sun everyday for at 3 hrs a day. I love the complexion I get in the summer and I think the darker I get the better, I even go to tanning salons sometimes in the winter months, to keep that glow. It doesn’t change the perception people have of me, to the least bit. My hair is the texture/length of Ananda Lewis, so when I go out people confuse me for a number of different nationalities, even in the summer, but I STILL consider myself DARK and proud of it. My dad EVEN considers him self dark and he isn’t even black!
You people are too nitpicky and if I thought like you people did I would be considered lightskinned in the winter and reddish/bronze/brown skinned in the summer…but to me that is DARK, and I love it. Being too color conscious is NEVER A good look.
It doesn’t matter what you look like after tanning. I would never describe Stacey Dash and Amerie as darkskinned. Especially not Stacey. This is the first time I’ve heard anyone call Stacey Dash darkskinned.
And I do LOVE dark skinned black men, dont like the light skinned brotha’s to much. They look gay (my opinion).

Beauty is Beauty Regardless same as Black is Black. I think this issue still exists but I think society is realizing beauty is not 1 dimensional.
