Since The Term Is Used So Often, What is, “Real Hip Hop”?

I’ve seen this term all over the site, especially when post are dealing with southern artist. What is the definition of, “Real Hip Hop”? What explanation do you have for some songs being real and others not? I want to see if you have a meaning for the term or just decide to use it to describe music you don’t like.

  5. wallySMALLZ Says:

bet most of ya’ll dont even know the 4 elements of hip hop

  6. C.A.S.H. Says:

I think people confuse “real hip hop” with “Hip Hop” and “rap”. Rap is a element to hip hop, but not all rap IS Hip Hop music.

  7. JMack Says:

to me it comes down to the artist being “real” or fake. honestly, i dont care where the artist is from, or about their past.

but if they have something interesting to talk about and they deliver it in a creative way… then I’m listening.

the thing that bothers me is bullshit rappers talking about slangin and bangin just because its the in thing to do.

I’m not doing the chicken noodle soup and I’m not walkin sheeit out…

  8. Don Imus Says:

REAL HIP HOP is a music style that doesn’t have to depend on the beat.

    it’s about what u spit.

  9. Marlo91487 Says:

WhenI and other people say yo that’s real hip hop. We’re saying the song pure cause the artist is rhyming whatever he feels and not doing what’s hot. The artist is rhyming about more than the cars, jewelry, and etc. He’s breaking from the norm and taking risks rhyming what people may not feel or feel. It’s like Common for instance his rhymes you can’t even compare to another artist because they ain’t taking chances and staying true to themselves rhyming about doing a none sense dance or taking the materialistic route. It’s you how can I take that and apply to life what can I take from that type of music besides having and don’t get it twiste yo I love having fun and all that. But seriously theirs issue like niggaz in my hood is trying to survive day to day the cops don’t make it no easier and niggaz in general, yo for real take from this bullshit music and hype themselves and think they killers. Everybody is a killer, drug dealer, or hustler or some shit. It’s like yo everybody ain’t like that if it was like that the world wouldn’t work. All I’m saying is real hip hop is hearing an artist rhyming and he’s staying true to himself. It’s some niggaz be rhyming and don’t have no credibility to back up what they rhyme about. Real hip hop is how a artist conveys himself when he does his music and he’s comfortable in his own skin. I seen a couple of artist and it’s like yo he’s an actor it’s like they may do what they talk about or don’t and they have to live to that persona like they always gotta say I’m gangster or I’m Hustler like if you that my nigga how you come across we’re going to notice you don’t have broadcast who you are 24/7 like advertising. Niggaz is selling their souls. And real hip hop is for the artist who never sold himself to be something he’s not he’s just him. Real Hip Hop is rhyming and staying true to yourself.

    real hiphop ex. Jay-z

  13. killaman Says:

Krs-one said it the best “rap is something we do, hip hop is what we live” to me “REAL HIPHOP” is someone who brings out and utilizes their experiences that people can relate to whether its something they saw or something they’ve actually had to to go through cause people will i.d with it and then support you as an individual as long as you continue to do that

  14. Drizzle Says:

REAL HIP HOP IS BEING ABLE TO CONVEY EVERYDAY LIFE EVERYDAY STRUGGLE IN A WAY PEOPLE ALL OVER ARE ABLE TO CONNECT TO…ALSO WHILE AT THE SAME TIME BEING CREATIVE AND DIFFERENT….PUSHING THE ENEVELOPE….ALSO PROVIDING MUSIC FOR ALL TYPES OF MUSIC….. HATE THE TERM “HUSTLER’S MUSIC”…IF YOU NICE ANY NIGGA WILL BUMP YO SHIT….

  15. Serengeti Says:

    @#3

    Four Elements of Hip Hop

    The MC
    The DJ
    The Battle (Breakin’)
    Graffiti

  16. mr.westcoast Says:

    @#8 LOL i cosign u no homo….@#10 ur right also….

  17. A dime a dozen Says:

There is no such thing as real hip hop; it is what it is. Everyone’s perception or interpretation of ‘real” is different & it all boils down to an ‘opinion’ not a fact. The phrase ‘hip hop is dead” is used to describe hip hop music that does not cater to their personal style or taste in music & if someoone else begs to differ than that person is told they don’t know what good music is because they don’t like what the said person likes.

  18. T Baby Says:

real hip hop consists of the artist making music because he loves to make music.
he makes music for himself and his fans.
not to make billions of dollars.
real hip hop isn’t controlled by corporations and sponsors.
real hip hop doesn’t follow a mold of songs.

    real hip hop is us.

  19. A dime a dozen Says:

but then again i cosign #9’s statement.

  20. T Baby Says:

    but then again.
since we, the younger generation, has lost sight of what real hip hop is…
the term “hip hop is dead” is relevant.

but mainly, mainstream hip hop is dead.

    hip hop will never die.
the shit just in a coma.
big business is gradually pulling the plug.

  21. T.R.E.Y. Says:

“real hip hop” is when Common releases a boring boom-bap single like “The Game” and then people wonder why it doesn’t get radio play.

  22. LoveOlSchoolMuzik Says:

Hip hop Isn’t in a “Coma”. Can someone tell me the last time they have heard a “straight rapping” song, no playing around with the track like Lil Wayne does. A lot of people say Lil’ Wayne is the greatest but he plays around the track too much. An example of “straight rapping” for me is Main Source feat. Nas – Live at The Barbeque, people actually listen to that and compare that to now music.

  23. LoveOlSchoolMuzik Says:

P.S. There is no real talent out there everyone is a rapper now days that has a catchy song. Back then in the 80’s and 90’s you had to be actually hot, now you just have to make a song about clothes, sneakers, or dance moves.

  24. xoxo91 Says:

T baby – realtalk. it bout the way u show wat u mean with a deep ass twist. freal i think we all have our diff version of real hip hop. it may not seem like hip hop to me but mayb to sum next person they callin it hip hop. i grew up listenin to all that hard traks. but for sum who didnt they dunt kno wat my version of real hip hop is and may look at it diff. im jus sayin hip hop aint ded, yea theres allota wack shit but i rather not listen to that and listen to my underground shit that for me is REAL hip hop. ezz

  25. Pounce Says:

Every business has an evolution if enough time goes by. Otherwise it would go out of business. The NBA for example, had to expand in more cities and states, get players from over seas, change their target demographic to fit the constituents (young black males) compared to back in the day.

Hip hop is the same way, had to expand from just east to west and now down south and shit even over seas. I mean rappers pushin albums back cause people over seas still actually buy albums.

Real hip hop is like the old Ford Model T, its a car but I prefer seat belts, airbags, pwr steering ect. Funny thing is these same niggas talkin about real hip hop is better blah blah blah. Probably got an ipod and download most of their music. Why not use tapes and boom boxes like old hip hop heads did back when hip hop was “alive”? Cause its an evolution!

  26. Joey A Says:

There are actually 5 elements of hip-hop serengeti. MC, breakin’, DJing, the battle, and KNOWLEDGE. I ain’t makin this shit up either. it is the most important, and the most forgotten, of the elements. As far as real hip-hop. Hip-hop is a lifestyle. So, anything stemming from such lifestyle is considered real hip-hop. I don’t care if you’re talkin bout slangin or wutever, if it comes from your life and what you experienced, it is hip-hop. Cause that’s all hip-hop is, a voice for the streets that fall on deaf ears otherwise. If it’s true to what you feel and live, it is hip-hop. And i don’t know anybody walkin’ it out or chicken noodlin’ it up the block, so that shit is garbage. If you’re talkin bout ice and drugs and you don’t got ice or drugs, you’re wack also.

  27. perplex tongue Says:

hip hop should be more then just a hott beat…you should be able to say something …or talk about something..u got a voice…i mean its cool to have a club joint…but wuteva…i prefer lyrics and punchlines

  28. KillaCalifornia213 Says:

    Real Hip-Hop takes skill..

Whetehr it’s graffitti, breaking, rapping.. and I guess dressing(fashion sense).

Being ghetto is not being HipHop.

    Ignorance is not HipHop.

    Simple-mindedness is not HipHop.

    Senseless violence is not HipHop.

    Being illiterate is not HipHop.

HipHop is a culture which promotes creativity and skill with a sense of competition.

    West!

  29. SEAN CK Says:

Real Hip Hop is that shit based on The Knowledge The Life… Its Creative its TRUTHFUL! its from the heart… its not glorifying women, violence, or money… its that music that speaks to the people…

check this… tHis iS Hip HOP!!!

  30. wallySMALLZ Says:

  31. OLA Says:

real hip hop rappers are just rappers who are good LOL whitty rhymes, wordplay, beautiful metaphors, etc etc. it doesnt matter where u come from, sex, race, etc….as long as ur nicee and dont put out crap like sum of these southern artists then lyrically ur a real hip hop rapper

  32. blaze Says:

there is no definition that embodys the whole meaning of hip hop. how ever, hip hop can be descibed with adjectives such as rapping, freestylin, break dancin, graffiti and my fav of all time – prettey much any thing that is artistic.

  33. KingFono (All Time Greatest Hater!) Says:

    Nas Pac and Scarface!

  34. Jince Says:

since your question was posed to us, then it is only natural that we answer the question in our own subjective conscience

we can try and make an objective statement, but i don’t think people can make one when it applies to hip hop music

in MY opinion…my belief…is that hip hop is a collaboration of raw emotion that transcends wax, plastic, or even .mp3’s…hip hop reaches out and grasps the listener in a way that the listener becomes entranced in the music

hip hop is not merely “music”…like others have mentioned, it IS a lifestyle.

    – The clothes
    – The music
    – The slanguage
    – The dance

hip hop embodies all this and more. I will admit that I have backlashed at almost every “snap” or “trap” music song posted on this site, claiming it isn’t hip hop…but the truth of the matter is that what we consider hip hop is SUBJECTIVE…I grew up in the 90’s and don’t really remember anything from 96 and back…yet, by gradually digging up artists one by one, i’ve developed an appreciation of the “old school” genre

I personally abhor the likes of 50 cent, jim jones, the dude that made that “krispy” song, and Lil Jon….but I believe that the generation that grew up listening to these fellas constantly, have a completely different perspective of hip hop than we do. They haven’t developed an appreciation for the simplified bass loop, etc. Maybe in the future they might stumble upon an old KRS record and enjoy the message (we can only hope).

I’m glad we have sites like this where we can debate and debase various aspects of the hip hop culture. We can formulate our own opinions and discover parts of hip hop we have never heard about. Hip hop is still alive, yet in a different form – indie labels.

The artists from labels such as Stones Throw, OkayPlayer, QN5, La Cosa Nostra, etc. have embodied the hunger of the generation before us…yet it is the fault of the media that we have not come across them on tv or the radio.

Make no mistake about it people, as long as the media is the 4th branch of the government, the people will be brainwashed. It’s up to us to dig through the trash they spew to us and find the gems worth giving four minutes of our lives to.

  35. money in the bank Says:

REAL HIP-HOP IS THAT SONG THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING. IT COMES FROM THE RAPPERS CREATIVTIY OR SOUL. IT IS JUST LYRICALLY HOT. IT IS NOT THAT COMMERCIAL B.S. IT IS NOT THE SONG THE RAPPERS MAKE BECAUSE HE THINK IT WILL HELP THE ALUBM SELL. IT IS THE SONG FOR REAL HIP-HOP FANS. THAT IS ONLY A SHORT DEFINITION BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO DEFINE IT WHEN RAPPERS ARE SO UNIQUE. REAL HIP-HOP SAYS SOMETHING. JUST THINK OF THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF SONGS LIKE
AY, BAY,BAY AND SO KRISPY AND YOU GET THE ANSWER TO WHAT REAL HIP-HOP IS. THINK KRS-ONE, NAS, JAY, AND PAC. THERE IS YOUR DEF.

  36. Bitch Magnet Says:

real hip hop bring the hood together…real hip hop relate to the fans and the hood..real hip hop is aggresive competition..real hip hop is..must i go on?

  37. Stick2daScript Says:

    @ 17 – A Dime A Dozen

you’re all the way on point. in “my opinion” your comment made the most sense!

  38. illwill29 Says:

Hey realtalkny can you post the new videos of Big Shug “Play it” prod by Premier and the Polyrhthmic Addicts “Reachin” feat. Pharoahe Monche….in my opinion thats as close to real hip hop as you gonna get…

i take that back that is real hip hop..!!

  39. Garbage Rap from the South Says:

We should just call down south artists, CRAPPERS, cause all they make is crap ! Real hip hop comes from the home of hip hop, NYC….. END OF DISCUSSION

  40. Jozzy (MISS LADY) Says:

Real Hiphop Tells a story,in a FUN, creative way. it uplifts as well as shining light on certain topics that may be under the radar in mainstream media. Hiphop is a statement and i feel as if u aint making a statement in what u doin then it aint Hiphop. its the voice of the people. if abuse is at a all time high with black teens and families it should be “hiphop’s” job to address it. if aids is steadymincreasing in black households hip hop should shine a lil light on dat topic.

  41. QuadakiDD Says:

    KRS-1 said it best. HIP-HOP

Hip- being up on it. If you’re hip to something, you basically know whats up.

Hop-now that you’re hip to it its time to make moves. Doing, living and being.

When public Enemy found out there was something wrong with our government, they were hip to it. But making the world see it thru their music, made it hip-hop.

When NWA came thru they put NY and the rest of the world on to what was goin on in the west. Its a culture that deals with the reality, but not only knowing the reality, but walking in it and living it.

    Also cosign# 13.

  42. Terrell Says:

Coming from a younger viewers perspective. I feel that a lot of adults in this world “think” they have an effect on Hip Hop today. Back then, Hip Hop appealed to those who listened to it. Hip Hop today is only doing the same thing. The world has changed and so did how people view themselves and we’re always looking for something fresh. Did the people from the older generation believe that Hip Hop would truly stay the same. I feel that Hip Hop is what you make of it. It’s a very diverse genre of music and what you want to categorize as Hip Hop, no one can tell you differently. That’s my take on it.

  43. QuadakiDD Says:

Hip-Hop= THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE!!!!! Good point #38

  44. D-BOY Says:

IM 19 .. MY DEFINITION OF REAL HIP-HOP .. 1990′S … WASNT OLD ENUFF 4 DA 80S.. LIVED DA 90S.. N EVOLVED WIT ‘NEW’ HIP HOP IN DA 2000′S.. SO IN DA END ERRY1 WHO LISTENS 2 HIP HOP HAS DEYR OWN DEFINITION OF ‘REAL HIP HOP’ …

  45. MardiGraz Says:

Real hip-hop is about lyricism and originality period. Its not cut and paste and it ain’t dumb. The south just ain’t got too much lyricism or originality I mean there are some exceptins but not many and the four elements of hip-hop are Rappin, Graffiti, Breakin, & Beatboxin the last two of which are basically lost arts.

  46. MardiGraz Says:

A dime a dozen I also like what you said. Very relevant input. it is largely an opinion based term however being that hip-hop was defined as “this” in the beginning and now its “that” (Black sheep fans stand up) a lot of “purists” will refer back to the original elements that made the thing what it was. Hip-Hop: self expression, creativity, oppression, wit, delivery,…..Damn that coulda been a bar right there lol.

  47. TAXWRITER Says:

yo wuzzup with realtalk, it seems as if u are pissed that we are criticizing the music that is out now, that isn’t really good, and they are mostly coming from tha rappers from tha south, and im from miami and i agree that mos,t not all of the south music sucks right now, Real hiphop is music that u can relate 2, u cant relate 2 no ay bay ay bay ay bay bay shit.

  48. JamRock Says:

In my opinion real hip-hop is rap that the average person can relate to and also is rap that is truthful, not made up or fiction. Singing about big rims, girls wit big assess and livin it up in mansions is not anything that I can nor 75% of America can relate to. Also real hip hop is complex rhymes not that abc 123 nursery rhyme bullshit. But in the end the definition is really based on opinion cuz A Bay Bay might be considered real hip hop to some people. LOL.

  49. rob Says:

couldn’t say it any better than #17

  50. H Deezy Says:

“Real Hip Hop” is always gone b different according to who u ask.

  51. Yuu serious?! Says:

i dont know if i could come up with a proper term but i can say is real hip-hop comes threw the heart and is original that totally represents the hip-hop culture and can relate to anybody.. and also another thing about real hip-hop shows that it was notmade to be perfect..these days you watch or listen to these so called “hip-hop artist” and they talk about how perfect there lives are…bout the money and girls. Sometimes gangster rappers they talk about how bad it is on the places they live but these days it seems like they only say it because they are paid.
Real hiphop requres talent and there is nooo talent at all now ppl just rhyme words and call themselves role models for hip-hop. Same with the dancing. Dancing is horrrible it’s a joke now..the only good new dancing is krump..i us like pooole palace and i still do but it gets old. I feel
Which is why.. but yea real hip-hop doesn’t lie like all these lying artists..

Same with r&b….the only real r&b singer right now is ne-yo 1# he accually rights songs #2 he writes most of all the popular hits for popular r&b artists…so i say r&b isn’t real either atleast for now…chris brown shoulllldn’t even be requried a r&b artist either he hasnt even gotta first kiss yet..if your an r&b singer you gottta talk deeeper than dat

  52. TRICIA Says:

REAL HIP HOP IS WHEN THE MUSIC CAN ACTUALLY BE CLASSIFIED AS ART. WHEN THE PERSON MAKING THE MUSIC, CAN BE CONSIDERED AN ARTIST. MUSIC IS A FORM OF ART. WHEN THE MUSIC CAN GO BEYOND JUST MAKING A SONG FOR MONEY. WHEN THE MUSIC IS SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE MADE WITH THE HIGHEST LYRICAL QUALITY. AS IT WAS BEING DONE FOR MONEY, BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY BEING DONE FOR FREE.AND STILL BE REALLY GREAT. EVEN IF THERE WAS NO MONEY TO BE MADE. NOT ALL PEOPLE WHO PUT A SONG TOGETHER ARE TRUE ARTIST, THEY SEE IT MORE AS A JOB JUST ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE MONEY. MUSIC OR ART IS SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE IS BORN WITH, A TRUE NATURAL GIFT, THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME. NOT ANYONE CAN WAKE UP IN THE MORNING AND BECOME A SINGER. WELL U CAN BUT THE RESULTS WILL BE TERRIBLE. BECAUSE THE TRUE NATURAL TALENT AND GIFT IS NOT PRESENT.

  53. T.R.E.Y. Says:

really, people’re tryin’ too hard here. hip hop is hip hop. gangsta, conscious, crack-rap, whatever. if people don’t personally like it or think that certain artists aren’t being “genuine” (whatever that means,) that’s cool, but you can’t draw lines based on preferences.

i mean, is all hip hop just supposed to use samples and sound like it was made in the early ’90s to be “real?” i like the “commercial” production on Jigga’s Blueprint 2 substantially more than i like a lot of basic boom bap, is that not real. i’s jez sayin’.

it’s cool if New York wants to come back, but like i saw Polow da Don say in some interview recently, people gotta get off this “it was all good in the mid-’90s” mentality and freshen the sound. doesn’t mean they gotta rhyme over “This Is Why I’m Hot”/”Wipe Me Down”-style beats, but some people’re clueless when they complain about X album not selling. chances are it’s because MC Noonecares didn’t take the time to make a viable single, and it ain’t because the record labels are evil. there’s ways to cross over without compromising shit much.

not directed to anyone in particular, just my thoughts on this “real rap” shyte. the South’s runnin’ shit for a reason. NY needs a new Jay-Z, someone who knows how to balance commercial appeal with bein’ straight-up dope. i’d say T.I. and Kanye West are good candidates, but then, they ain’t from New York.

  54. Frizzle Says:

Hip-Hop to me is music that express whats going on in todays ghettos… For it to be real hip-hop you must have experience it and it should be relative to shit in the hood. Dont talk bout drugs because it’s the shit to do, keep it real…talk about your struggle for example not being able to get a job, girl issues, watever! I’m working on a demo, they say actions speak louder then words so I plan to give the world a example…

If Hip- hop is dead I’m its reincarnation… your can keep that line, I got million more!

  55. AJ Says:

Real Hiphop is somethink you can relate to like in 2 Pac song Dear Mama I’m sure alot of people can relate to that because he was talk about the struggle him Mom made to put food on the table. Real Hiphop is more than the beat it is the lyrics and has a deep meaning in the songs a message that you’re trying to tell people.

  56. Luke From Germany Says:

id say real hip hop or rap is from the heart, its just real. its somethin you can relate to cause the artist is tellin you something, and i also think when it comes to that real rap shit it doesnt even depend on the beat, its only about the lyriks. i mean im german, im white, but that has nothing to say, you aint gotta be black or you dont have to be from the ghetto to be hip hop or to listen to it, its just your lifestyle and the way youre thinkin and actin. i may not live the life that they talk about but nonetheless i can relate to it cause everybody has a struggle and in some way everybodys hustelin and goes through the same shit and has the same problems in life and i think (”real”) rapmusic is the music that expresses that the best, i can hear what they wanna tell me and i can feel what they wanna tell me, just some real stories and thats what its about. there are just too many out there that are imitating that whole shit and thats fake,… so thats not real
one more thing, i think most people mean classic hip hop when they talk about real hip hop.
sorry if my english isnt that good, i tryied hard :P

  57. Jaisaun Says:

There’s no such thing as “Real Hip Hop”. It’s either Hip Hop or (C)Rap Music. Period.

    Visit Hip Hop @ http://www.myspace.com/jaisaunmusic

  58. KG Says:

Preach #34… It’s all about perspective.

  59. Zaft Says:

real hiphop is something u can relate to, wether its struggle (mostly) gangbangin, slangin dope etc… not no cannibus imginary rhymes that consider ill, thats not ill thats bullshit, dont nobody feel this shit but underground geeks!

  60. NY_Lady Says:

yall writin too much shit yo hip hop is music get wit it…I mean the detail you put in it is your version of hip hop period

  61. Lavont'e Hargraves Says:

STOP STOP STOP STOP SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Imma sum this all up in one line cuz i don’t want you to skip over mine like you did the rest of those long lame comments…..hip-hop is JUST ACTIONS TAKEN PLACE WHEN RESPECT IS WANTED……HIP-HOP CAN B BREAKDANCIN-RAP-POETRY-GRAFFITTI-DISC JOCKING- OR EVEN FIGHTING….any thing you say or do in the pursuit of getting respect is HIP-HOP!!!
