lemme be one of the first to say JOELL ORTIZ is one of the nicest and most talented lyricist to come out since Lupe (check out the mixtapes and Food & Liquor if u dont agree). see what alot of people fail to realize nowadays is that rappers talk greasy and lyricist paint pictures. Hiphop is an artform and these lyricists are architects of the structure and creation. just cause a brotha can ride the beat, doesnt mean he or she will be able to hold down longevity and wisdom for the listeners to idolize. pick your top 10 favorite mcs and i guarantee 70-90% of them have been around since the 90s doing their thing and puttin in work. thats when music was more than music. it was love. it was admiration for the movement. i cant fully say that i hate rap music now, but it doesnt move me the same. i love me some blackstar, the roots, nas, rakim, krs-one, common, j dilla, lil brother, dead prez, empd, and so on. can u honestly name a movement of lyricists like these dudes, nah? i didnt think so. lets hope that Lupe and Joell can set a trend that will motivate and move us back to where we need to be. theres no more struggle in lyrics. theres struggle in the industry, no doubt. maintain, my brothas and sista.
