RealTalkNY’s Top 5: What Hip-Hop’s Been Missing
RealTalkNY presents, What Hip-Hop’s Been Missing. A top 5 list of the things the hip-hop game is missing right now. Read below and feel free to discuss.
5. New York – Over the past couple of years, hip-hop has seen southern music rise to prominence with the emergence of some of today’s most notable emcees hailing from the south. It’s no denying the influence the south has made on the hip-hop culture. And although it’s good to hear from the once slept on region, it would be great for hip-hop if New York and the east coast came back to add more diversity to the game.
4. GOD MC – With the list of top emcees getting shorter every year and your favorite rapper getting older, hip-hop needs a new voice. An emcee that has the talent to put out top-selling albums and at the same time possess enough charismatic appeal to appear on shows like Oprah or Bill O’ Reilly to defend a culture that’s always been scrutinized by the media.
3. Classic Albums – This past year in music, artists and record labels saw album sells plummet due to bootlegging. Whether or not this has lead some rap artists to focus more on outside business ventures than there music (which has hurt the quality of albums) is up for questioning. And like many others, I’m guilty of buying an album off the strength of one single (damn you Rich Boy), then I’m greatly disappointed when I purchase the album and it’s filled with nothing but album fillers. Hip-Hop is definitely in the need of that one classic album.
2. Originality – Yes, even this still matters in today’s music industry, but it’s definitely hard to come by. When there’s a successful rap artist, industry execs tend to try and clone the artist and duplicate their music by putting out a carbon copy version of the same emcee. This leads to the over saturation of the same type of music, which ultimately hurts hip-hop.
1.Quality Music – Rather than letting their talent speak for themselves, more and more rap artists are looking to ride the wave of an overly publicized rap beef to sell records. This doesn’t work all the time, (please see the career of Gillie Da Kid for more details). In order for the hip-hop culture to continue to grow and remain relevant in today’s music industry, our artist need to put out quality music. That is and always will be the bottom line.
RTNY now poses the question to you, what do you think hip-hop’s missing?

123 Comments so far
I think u covered everything duke. I agree 100 percent.
Hip hop is missing the return of the ROC……along with everything else you said.
yeah thats preety much it…something that speaks to its listeners, i feel hip hop these days lacks story..artist use to tell stories, nobody really sayin much these days, well nothing i can relate to…and thats whats important.. all the shit that is going on in todays world there is more people can talk about rather then bitches and other things that our really not relevant in my hood and hoods across america im sure..i have faith in hip hop and i believe shit is gonna step up real soon
How about adding California to that list ;{
i totally agree with you fam’! but what if the Hip Hop Messiah came from overseas?? I’m just saying…
the west coast. hip hop needs both cali & Ny. remember the 90’s? hip hop in the 90’s was so good because cali & ny was all about good classic music. south wasn’t shit. once they came in, they fucked everything up.
I think hip-hop is missing A&Rs that actually want to develop new talent and not just put them out for a “hit” single, put out the album, and then never hear from the artists again.
Also, labels that push conscious MCs and don’t continue to obliterate the airwaves with the same ol’ bullshit.
damn good post. nothing to say after that
LUPE FIASCO. classic album
MIMS……..
@ MAG
MIMS classic album, get the fUck outta here he’s a one hit wonder
No doubt…NYC and Cali as well as A&Rs developing artist. Other than T.I.,UGK, and OutKast, tha south doent have much to offer. And if u thinkin Lil Wayne, Idont think his music is relavent. I dont beleive you, you need more people. and Lupe’s album was definitly CLASSIC!!!!
u know what alot of y’all forget is what Dead Prez repeated to y’all: “It’s bigger than hip hop”.
All the things C.K pointed out as things “missing in Hip Hop” aren’t missing; they are undermined by ‘forces’ bigger than hip hop. Corporations that rather keep u dumb, radio that rather play stupidity, Record Companies after a big profit.
New York is barking, they aint listening. There is a GOD MC out there, he just aint promoted right(stifled by people who would rather he dont speak right now.)
There’s a couple classic albums out there, they just dont make it to your shelf(Lupe didnt sell, for example. Mood Muzik 2, though a mixtape, was classic in many opinions).
Originality is not encouraged. Period. and that fucks up the quality.
“It’s bigger than….Hip- Hop.”
on that note, quick shameless Plugs.
Talib Kweli- Eardrum out in July
Rhymefest- El Che…out this fall
Lupe Fiasco- The cool-oct 31
yep
Tru indeed….Hip-Hop needs that N.Y.-Cali energy. Cant forget about Cali. Developing artist is a must too. Now-a-days artist are just being thrown out ther for a quick buck and it shows. As far as the south, there nobody holdin it down for real out there exept T.I.,Outkast,and UGK. Other than that. It aint many. And if you bout to say lil Wayne. Hes lyrical, but his music aint heart felt. He just gets high and says shit. Lupe’s Album was CLASSIC!!!! Cant wait for the next one.
“This why I ROCK”……..Fuck the haters
LOL @ mag you must be his sister or something
saigon ftw
SMH…chamillionaire hasn’t been mentioned!!! Also theres a rocky marathon on SPIKE
.
.
.
and I hate all back pack rappers!!!!! except Lupe
nyoil FTW
Papoose is the only one out there wit da ability to take ova n bring NYC back
I’m hating..who wrote this?
nvm
I think Hip Hop is doing well but mainstream wise..the shit you listed is what’s needed.
i think hip hop is indeed missin the top 5… but this is what i think hip hop needs
1. Detox before 2008!!!!, Eminem LP, Outkast (rap)
2. strong or classic effort from Curtis
3. i hear Roc La Familia pt. 2 is comin, that needs to pick up from the 1st LP
4. collabo albums…
(kanYe, lupe, pharrell) all 3 can spit imagine P & kanYe on the beats!!!
(Hove & God Son) over Premo, Dre, kaYne, blaze whoever else
(Weezy & Juelz)
(Hove, Scarface, Beans) look at couple tracks they’ve done already
(Dre & Snoop) classic and Snoop back at it on the mic!
another (Red & Meth)
the rap game needs these dudes to stop sayin how they wanna do stuff together and JUST DO IT!!
5. Tours… these rap dudes dont do big tours now
need more up in smoke, roc the mic, hard knock life etc etc
i mean i can go on & on but yall see the point
agree 100%. Those artists that are putting out the “hit singles” are the one hit wonders and hopefully the real emcees like lupe and kanye can hold the game down until the next wave of artist to come up to the mainstream.
Along with RTNY We need that NY flava to bring Hip Hop back. After all we are the originators. NY stand up! We also need :
hov, bleek, the lox, peedi crack, beanie, fabolous, freeway, cassidy, papoose, busta, dmx, juelz, ll cool j, etc., to get off of their asses and make hip hop happen!
I don’t know how much more of this down south garbage, that they classify as hip hop nowadays, that I can take. (no disrespect to anyone from the south, just my opinion and preference).
I think radio is killing hip-hop BIGTIME !!! The radio & these video channels play the same ten song allday . Not hating on the south . I like a lot southern music . But if your in ny or cali you want to hear more local stuff mixed into what they play on the radio . It used to be that way not anymore . Thats why that post yal had Of snoop was like damn can we hear some west coast music on the west coast . Aint that the quality aint there it is . There just not playing it . Same thing in Ny .
2 Simplistic stuff made it so that anybody that could repeat a nursery rhyme could make a hit if the beat was hot . I call all these new kats the baha boys ( who let the dogs out ha ) remeber them ? where are they now ? ha all this pop lock and drop it , 2 step , chicken noodle soup , tatted up , laffy taffy , lean wit it rock wit it , hey baby hey baby nonsense HAS TO COME TO AN END Please bring the lyrics back . Jermaine dupri just signed them kats that made that aunt jackie song ????? thats insulting to every real struggling artists with skills out there . O and they need to cancel that freestle friday thing on 106 n park . HORRIBLE !!! That aint been good since free and aj left
One other thing I gotta add is better video presentation. I remeber when watching a video made you like the song. Now I can watch rap city and 9 out of 10 videos have the same three things:
1. Girls
2. Jewelry
3. Money shown and thrown
Who can relate to that? I can’t relate to the music no more. I miss watching videos that actually were like short films. Stop showing all these girls that nobody gets and show us some srtistry in your visual presentation. I don’t hink this has anything to do with NY. This is about creativity. Music videos, album covers, logos all that.

Hip Hop needs it’s album sales back. And maybe some really big tours like Anger Management or Smoke Em Up. If hip hop still had the same numbers things would be a lot better. I dunno who to blame the internet or the rappers themselves.
Maybe once the big numbers come back we’ll see a revival in hip hop. 50, Dr Dre, Kanye, TI, and maybe Eminem & D12 can help make hip hop regain it’s former glory. We just need those big numbers back. Could this be the year!!!
Sorry it’s called the Up In Smoke Tour, shit I wont forgive myelf for that one. Dammmmmn.
I feel you on this won fam. LOOL that nigga sed mimz album is a classic album LOL fhuk outta here wit that, but ye i aint from tha east coast but it look like they slowly comin bak SLOWLY, Joel Ortiz, Tru Life tryna make a name for himself. Cuz for tha past yearz Jigga Man And Nas Been holdin down east coast. N Word To #31
3 hip-hop died when everybody started saying im not a rapper im a such n such . Everybody taking from the game and isnt giving anything back . Take jay-z for example , he’s made so much off hip-hop but he’s given so much back . He’s put talented people in positions of power . He’s put out classic material his whole career that takes hard work and effort . Stop trying to hustle the game all the time . hustle to get ya paper YEA but still take the time to make quality music feel me . You know its real people say stuff like i can sell a mill saying nothing on a track !!! then the next line say i represent ny !!! WOW that made us look bad . Check out my music on my page yal i gotta song called kiss my ass that played on shade 45 let me know what you think http://www.myspace.com/ezlogic leave a comment
Oh ye rich boi tricked me to LOL ;[ thought that album wus gonna be hype but it wuz WHACK.
Labels are definitely way too busy putting all the promotional resources in their biggest stars while leaving others to fend on their own (see Method Man and Redman in the past year).
I agree radio and music video channels are doing little but play the same stuff. I was baffled to hear the new T-Pain single “Bartender” so often when that track is certified trash by all means. Atlantic keeping Saigon off the shelves, same goes for Jive and most of their hip-hop roster. Should be interesting how the new T.I. and Chamillionaire albums are received.
I gotta agree 100% with this and I think Joe Budden could help reverse this trend. But its just the fact that today’s society is just all about getting rich quick and the way to get rich now is ringtones so if you can have a sampled chorus that will sell millions its almost the same as selling a CD except for only one song and just as much money. Rappers are lazy and we needa change it.
LMAO logic “You know its real people say stuff like i can sell a mill saying nothing on a track !!! then the next line say i represent ny !!!” I Agree on that.. i dunno hip hop is in tha state of emergency lol like real talk sed non orginality everybodi sound tha same. and everybodi so brainwashed or w.e by niggas rappin bout clothez n jewlry..gimicz that they dont kno tha real Hip Hop Is. ya digg ?
Love 2 all my New Yorkers but man it’s other music going on too, that’s just one state homie. What about Saigon and Papoose? They got all this hype and attention 4 what wheres they shit at?? Hip Hop’s missing creativity and a strong foundation all this barking but no ones doing anything to start the Hip Hop Revolution. Stop blaming the south for the decline of Hip Hop when you turn right around and buy into all the gimmicks i.e. the chicks, the jewelry, money, clothes, fads, ect.
WE NEED EMINEM BACK!!!
the answer to da question is a rapper from philadelphia by the name of B.DOT….. (NO HE DOES NOT, I REPEAT DOES NOT RAP LIKE AN AVERAGE PHILLY RAPPER)
U NY babies need to stop crying the south running shit deal with weeeeeeeeezy baaaaaaaby
U NY babies need to stop crying the south running shit deal with it weeeeeeeeezy baaaaaaaby
Yeah the south is running shit, until new york steps up it’s going to be that way good topic to post about though
i dont carewat noone says if youre a true hiphop fan then you know god mc right now is JOE BUDDEN. yeah thats right joe fukin budden. so slept on cause he reaches over people’s heads. he is so evrsatile and spits that real deep shit. dont believe me thenlisten to these tracks
6 minutes, 3 sides to a story(one of the best songs ever made), dumb out, are you in that mood yet, where did it go wrong(the truth about relatioships wen a shorty cheats), UNFORGIVEN, MY LIFE
@ #42 that was probably the best comment,RTNY is right though hiphop has changed and it really is missing alot
I aint from NY, but Hip-Hop iz in tha state of emergency. For more on what we can do about this see #26. Props-Ya Boi RL
Co-sign #48-Joe Buddens iz tha truth…
yeah budden is nice, quadakidd when is he dropping?
all in one word……((saigon))
check his rap sheet…………
The Main thing they are missing is Rappers who do it for more than just the money…..We need Rappers/MC’s whos dream it is to make in the Hip-Hop game, who want more than just the money, and you don’t see that anymore…..The joy you seen out of artists like a Kanye West/50 Cent/Eminem/Nelly when they first came out, who just had a gleam in there eye and was just happy to be seen on T.V or heard on the radio, not Rappers who just wanna make a quick buck because they see other rappers on T.V with nice chains and nice cars….DO IT CAUSE YOU LOVE IT, AND LOVE THAT YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!
heres the lyrics form his freestyle called “def jam diss” about him gettin blackballed. now this is real stuff
“Pump It Up” came out, was a hit all over the country
And so I figured all over they’d want me, Yeah
The buzz was there and the feeling was timely
And Kev said that he would put the whole building behind me, Yeah
the whole office Daps me freely
And Mr. Cohen always seems so happy to see me
Im treated like a new man, musta got a facelift
This what I dreamed of welcome to the matrix
BET rated me “Next” we coming up Jersey
Air time, MTV Buzzworthy
If that aint make things final
The song playd all throughout the World Series and the NBA Finals
Wrap up ya album Joey its goin out now
Only problem is my voice is goin out now
Doc said I need a surgey to fix it
And if something goes wrong it could be permanitly TWIST-TED!
Now thats something I can’t afford
So steroid shots in my abbs just so I could record
The more I talk its ruining my chords and on top of it all
Now Def Jam wants ya boy on tour
This is important you can’t back out
Its good exposure and 112’s coming back out
Im on their second single and their on mine
Im bout to shine June 10th yup its time BUT WAIT!
Something must be wrong with the soundscan
Thats when it all started to go down man
Am I wrong or what here?
“Toos Fast..” Soundtrack did great and my song was on there
And things the way it seems
The [?] commercial
Pumping It Up with my face on screen
Had to change my second single cuz theres two 112’s/Joe Buddens
But Theirs turned into 112/Luda
Lil Jon called me for the “Get Low” Remix
But Lyor was goin through some TVT sh-t
Then they went and kept Joe off of the “Roc The Mic” tour
Somebody probably thought Joey would rock the mic more
Left the country did a single with J-LO
But with my luck I knew Columbia would say “No”
Radio hates “Fire” nah they wont try it
But they love that Rah Digga song that sounds just like it
Wanna keep me under dog, Im the underdog
And they don’t want ya’ll to see up under the fog, so ya’ll
Tell every man in the hood
Gold album one single I’d say im doin hella damn good
Listen here Def Jam, are you deaf man?
Politics aside please don’t interject fam
Listen to my sh-t now listen to the rest damn
Im Tay Diggs the best man, thats without a “Yes Man”

Did that the last time and I still repped damn
M.H. THANK YOU

Jim Jones THANK YOU
Lil Mo’ THANK YOU
Sad part now is when I walk by
And I see Mr. Cohen he can’t even say “Hi”
But Im a new man I feel like I got a facelift
This is what I dreamed of time to tackle the matrix
hip hop needs some help right now the last good album that came out recently was lupe’s and everyone slept on it
this si form UNFROGIVEN
Lets talk about the struggle, lets talk about the pain
Some people say they love you, but that don’t mean a thang
Some folks is so naive, not me.. I go insane
Some people dap you, they hug you.. they do it all in vain
That’s my depression talking.. maybe it’s really real
Maybe them doctors was right, and maybe I’m really ill
See I can’t really chill.. without feeling the guilt of me
Stealing these pills ….
Is anybody feeling me still?
(Shit) except for the hood.. nobody told me, I ever couldn’t
Instead, I pushed.. back when they told me I never would
Looking at me, like I was just a crook
I express the hood, and what I see on the daily
My scenery daily….
Task force… B & E’s daily
A task y’all.. being me daily
They want to put, 3 in me nail me
This is stuff, you only read on The Daily
Had product, but ain’t supply it then..
High off more than weed..so the product just got me higher than..
Product of my enviroment
Look-at-where-they-put-me.. and look where they telling me I gotta be
Stop and see, the robberies ..the poverty..
Naw fam, its not for me..
Its got to be, an opt atleast
Without-dudes-gettin’-chased-by police
So they gave us film, sport.. and the gift to make a hot CD
Back to the wall, against the ropes..
Nothings believable, feezable.. they don’t believe in you
You’ve been verbally beaten to…
A pulse, so the result to you think nothing is reachable
Reasonable, I tell you dreams come true
Yeah haters, even YOU!
Good call Real Talk, the game needs more rappers who actually about something. The cats that come in the game and call out Legends with bull-shit beef that don’t even go bronze need to stay home. When someone call out Jay or Nas or someone at that level they need to show respect to the guys who made it possible for them to eat. Rap needs more leaders people who aint afraid of having they own style instead of tryin to sound like everyone else. We need more people to represent our culture right, be business men because life ain’t that bad if you gettin spins on the radio or gettin play on the major networks. T.I, Luda, Lupe, Game, Nelly, Papoose, Common, Talib, Kanye, Beans, 50, Lil Wayne, there are a few cats who can take the torch but who is willing to do it? Right Now I say T.I.
we need 50 Cent he’s the only one that is actually gonna send ppl to the stores outside of Jay-Z but jay already came 50 Cent is Hiphop he is keepin it alive real talk
damn how many of yall r gunna CONTINUE bad mouthing the south? grow up. bad/good music comes from EVERYWHERE. when NY was dominating, they had just as much if not MORE garbage coming from there than the south does now. the more popular the region= the more the chance of BS being birthed
For 15 years i ve been hearing this im bringing new york back shit
new york is fine
yall dude are just stuck on this monotonous rhetoric
premo said it best real hiphop is not on the radio
TOO ALL YOU 50 STANS:
Things aren’t looking too good for 50 Cent’s forthcoming ‘Curtis’ album. According to reports, execs at the G-Unit leader’s record label, Interscope, are unhappy with the lack of public interest in regard to the rapper’s latest singles ‘Amusement Park’ and ‘Straight To The Bank’. This, apparently, was a major factor in the decision to push the album back from June to September. 50 is said to be frustrated and is ‘attempting to salvage the situation’.
“I can’t say I didn’t expect it. 50’s tactic of starting beef with other rappers to generate a buzz around his own album got tired real quick. It’s as if he started to believe his own hype and now no one is checking for him. I really don’t see this ‘Curtis’ album performing as well as any of his other CD’s. Seems he’s heading for the same fate as Ja Rule…” (SOURCE)
Will 50 Cent Succeed With ‘Curtis’?
50 IS NOT THE ANSWER.
good subject Realtalk, how about a list of the top mc’s next!
i agree real good topic and well written
i agree w c.k. & breeze budden should be on the cover of every hip hop mag ritenow. also i think shea davis “punch” is a problem too. i thought he was wak at first but he grew on me like a muthatfucka. he like 50 in his mixtape days. joell ortiz iz nasty. and i cant wait to hear serious jones’ album.
budden needs his due i totally agree he’s slept on oh yeah shoutout out to clark kent and rtny for some good shit
#31 I feel you, yesterday I was watching Sucker Free Sunday, and they were featuring all of Jay-z classic videos, I was like damn all his vids were like mini movies, especially Jay in the 90s. Nas too, then I watched Fade to Black and there was this scene where he was chillin in his office with his friends and they was having a discussion about gangster rap and how the public is so obsessed with it that it scares rappers into not being themselves because they try to please the pulbic. Which, in my opinion, is where the rebirth of hip-hop starts, if the majority demands real hip-hop then it will start to surface alot more. Unfortunatly the majority of people that listen to rap, lets be real, are young people, and all young people want to do is have fun, so thats why you hear alot of mediocre party like a rockstar, two step, walk it out songs, which are ok to have on every once in a while because people like to have fun and dance. Of course thats only part of the problem, but thats where it starts.
By the way RTNY wicked post. Proppzzz!
If you turn off the radio and tv, you’ll notice that REAL hip hop DOES exist, which would make this commentary mute.
U know what it is….we need some real mc that caN FREESTYLE AND BRING OUT CLASSIC ALBUMS,a good mc is a mc that can freestyle out is head.No paper but straight from the heart mind body and soul.Thast what we need no bullshit singels but real 20 songs album not ten are 11 fucking songs u feel me.Step youre game up
“RTNY now poses the question to you, what do you think hip-hop’s missing?”
Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Big Punisher, and any other artist who’s died before their time.
AMEN! The only thing I would add is consistency. I’ve never heard such inconsistent music. Very few artist/s put together albums you can listen to from beginning to end. As far as who to blame, blame ‘em all.
HIP HOP NEEDS CASSIDY, BUDDENS, AND FABOLOUS (THA OLD FABOLOUS). AND THAT’S ABOUT IT.
JR RIGHT AS HELL!!!!!! AND RAP HAS WAY TOO MUCH HATE!!!
AND IF U WANT A GOD MC I THINK I KNOW OF ONE…
M
[...] Here’s a bunch of stuff to help yall catch up from over the weekend. A GREAT article on the Top 5 things Hip-Hop is missing. (RealTalkNY) [...]
http://www.myspace.com/PSTSaint
I’m counting on lupe fiasco to bring hip-hop back alive!
WEST COAST = realhiphop
HIP HOP NEEDS ARTISTS LIKE COMMON, KANYE, TALIB, MOS DEF, AND NAS. ALL THESE RAPPERS LIKE TO EDUCATE AND DISCUSS POLITICS. THEY NOT ALL ABOUT THE “HOOD, I SHOT YA HOMEBOY AND I’LL SHOOT YOU” GIMMICK. THEY ALL MAKE QUALITY MUSIC.
EVEN THOUGH JAY-Z HAS THE “GIMMICK” IN HIS MUSIC, HE ALSO HAS A VARIETY. HE HAS TAKEOVER THEN HE HAS 30 SOMETHING. HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET ARTISTS LIKE THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE.
Hip Hop is missing it’s independent swagger. It’s way to commercialized now, you have to do what the white man in the top spot says to do on what he thinks will sell records. If your totally independent it you don’t have to adhere to executive decisions. I’ve been listening lately to a lot of underground rappers and honestly their shit sounds better than the top artist I’ve been picking up in the stores.
we need budden
REALTALKNY WE NEED A MA$E AND CAM’RON REUNION…..
WE MORE KATS THAT LUV THE ART VERSUS USING THE ART AS A HUSTLE THE SHOULD GO BACK SELLING NICKLE SACKS OF DIRT WEED
x fylz baby come to the game reptilly on frank dot gutta man d woob and dj dinnero roc for life
HIP HOPS MISSING ME. LET IT BE KNOWN
Hip hop died when N.Y. turned their backs on the Best, I mean the Westcoast and Tupac. N.Y. is reaping what they sew. Gay-Z, Common spent, suckmaster sex, Gayru the damaja, and all these other corny sounding muthafuckas wanted to talk about how the west was too Gangsta and thugged out, well at least it was street shit, and it was versatile and them niggaz was tellin the Labels what the fuck they were gonna do, not the other day around. I mean yall was sayin we aint got no lyricists, and then Kurupt came and shitted on your whole state with ease, lyrically. The West breeds leaders, The Panthers started here, Gangbangin as we know it, started here as well as all the other G-shit everybody loves nowadays. Now every eastcoast rapper is talkin about thuggin and gangbangin. Yall need to copy the fact that we aint flashy, and we dont rap about givin money to bitches, yall should follow that. The eastcoast created rap, no doubt, but yall is so concerned with what other niggaz is doin, yall cant put it down. We love yall music on the West, but yall cant say the same. I love hiphop, and probably know more eastcoast hiphop than most eastcoast niggaz(I asked three niggaz from N.Y. about saigon in ‘05 and they didnt know what the fuck I was talkin about.) Yall ever seen Thug angel? Pac in like, 94 or 95 was asked, ” where do you see hip hop going in the future?” and Pac said straight up, ” Niggaz is only gonna talk about money and bitches, cuz thats all they talk about when they cant talk about what they really want to” And we all know what ALL NIGGAZ regardless of where you from want to talk about is this racist ass Govt. and how to fix this shit! So fuck all these coons, let them keep snappin they fingers and do you N.Y., the West is waitin.
well said jamrock(#67). i totally agree wit u rudeboi. best comment so far.. respect.
^^^ yea thx big up to you too….London….itz an international connection snitchez!
plz with this lupe shyt all them niggas is corn common all of them no 1 wanna hear that happy shit fuck otta here they fuckn suckkk thats that all they gotta do is ban hot 97 from suckn dj unk and all them snapping niggaz corny ass music so people wont be brain washed into liking the shit which has happened to me with a couple tracks they play them all the time and i just go fuck it i like this no like that krispy son thats my shit even though its corny thats y hiphop is were its at we not even repping ny no more we wanna be every one else thats it
Nothing is missing in Hip-Hop. The problem is overexploitation. Hip-hop allowed itself to become a fad in exchange of mainstream exposure. Now you got f-ing mainstream media mocking the art, and hiding the rednecks by showing us videos of MC Man-tans and the Millenium minstrel shows. Lyricists must come out and push this self degregation music off the map.
Hey dog! The west played itself with that Gangsta sh!t. Ain’t no man walking that hard every day and talking bout it on wax. That sh!t was so unbelievable that it got corny, and now niggaz laugh at the west coast mc’s. I mean, look at the hardest dudez out west in the 90’s: Ice Cube-making family movies. Ren-no longer relevant on the West Coast, Eazy-A.I.D.S. victim, Dawg, they made two Comedy movies spoofing the West Coast Gangsta Music-CB4 and Fear of a Black Hat!!! (I ain’t even puttin Malibu’s Most Wanted on yall) New York aint off the hook either. 50, Lloyd Banks, Buck-Them niggaz look retarded on t.v. now. They don’t even scare white folks, cause they so into hyping bullsh!t none of them negroes coulda did and record on wax(hood woulda swallowed em fam), that they bout as real as the tooth fairy!! Gangsta Rap is so played and prison negroes need to get a new role model. Hell Tupac was a ballet dancer, and Biggie went to Catholic School! Grow up bruhs, all that sh!t was pro-wrestling pre fight hype.
i think the problem with hip hop is nobodys having fun with there lyrics either there droping basehead verses or have no originality in there lyrics.also labels are hoping for a homerun mc or a homerun record that is not going to be there.i mean i used to love nas but his hip hop is dead comment was a disrespect to his whole career and thats why is cd didnt sell cause that a bad meassage to the art of hip hop, hip hop aint dead its just some rappers up for retirement like nas how dare he say that.record companies need to send a new wave of rappers.to the rappers make better songs develop the song come up with a new title and a new idea how to make a song better, proffread your lyrics,i have to say dipset all day you can listen to dipset for a whole day and be completely satisfied in your music chioce, rappers stop freestyling your like a runner who sprints your lyrics get tired.make songs.the one thing the south has over the north is rappers dont beef with each other they work together to make better music.west coast rappers need to make songs with east coast rappers that might be a really good thing for hip hop.dipseeeeetttt all day.hip hop isnt dead just do your own seach for dope records.
what i would like to see is the record companies focus on people who want to make a good quality song.i mean there are so many good signed and unsigned artist. record companies please allow artist to be themselves.tupac was a thug but his albums always had something more a bigger message,a bigger song,a real movement,a style a strong presents, another thing wassup with alot of good artist taking a year or 2 off artist like snoop mop, kanye, jada, ghost, mobb deep just to name a few i mean what r they doing with there time alot of artist on big labels r not making music what r they doing, they drop a freestyle here and there and thats it thats wack, make music man work if this is you art and your passion to make good music than do so. alot of rappers r taking to much time off, if you having trouble finding the right song ask another artist to colaborate with you on a track or something, and if the record companies r holding u back than speak out stand up and fight for your right to make good music.
one more issue that is mind boggling to me is russell simmmons and people who want to control the artists songs, censorship, and all that nonsense radio stations do not play curse words on the radio isnt that enough, lets face it if we dont have hip hop black people we dont have music ,people really need to understand that most rnb songs that make it big and r good songs has a rapper on it example run it chris brown and juelz.most people that critize hip hop listen to hip hop and thats a fact. rappers r responsible for a lot of fashion jobs like rocawear,g unit, sean john and others rappers have created so many jobs in different fields that have fed alot of familys and r still feeding those familys. black people and all races really need to stand up for hip hop, defend hip hop.russell simmons and others like al sharpton who by the way only shows up after something goes wrong only to collect never to prevent are false in my opinon i guess thats why he ran as a republican in the last election. but back to hip hop please someone get jayzzz on the case to save hip hop.he can do it rappers please speak out about the good you do for the people.jay we need you start another hip hop movement.
I am from Alabama… but hip-hop needs 1 thing… Three words…. formerly 9 members, sadly down to 8….
Wu-Tang Clan… if “The 8th Diagram” is nice then it could do a lot for Hip-Hop…
Ghostface had two nice albums in ‘06 that were slept on… in my opinion that makes him the hardest working man in hip-hop last year, from a musical standoint. Because anyone can release mix-tapes, especially when most of them have the same stuff, but it takes real effort to release two albums. And a lot of effort to release two quality albums…
There were other good albums the past year that were slept on also… “The Big Bang” “Red Gone Wild” “Hell Hath No Fury” “Food and Liquor” “Fishscale” “More Fish” and some others…
and everyone pushing Budden.. you all are right, but when (if) his album ever drops how many will buy it? Most will just download the torrent…
But seriously he has got to get un-shelved…. so versatile, so lyrical, and he has a powerful voice, and a powerful voice can do a lot for you and the industry (see Pac).
I’m out…
6. No Case Entertainment - With so many artists succeeding thru means of COMMERCIAL ONLY recordings, there is a strong need for a balance. Within No Case is the Hood, classic lyrical content, originality, creativeness, classic production, and overall PURE HIP HOP.

i agree with number #83 dont mix those 2 up tryin to be like Jay-Z. Like Fabolous said “you rappin to slow, im lappin yo flow, im bout to force niggas to go back for trappin for dough”.
I feel that CREATIVITY is lost among the new artists of today. It’s time for someone to pick up the torch & run with it! I think this is happening again now on the Underground Rap Circuit, but it needs to be brought to the mainstream! Underground rap is more RUGGED & RAW, UNCUT, so with that, it would be hard to do. You have the Don Imus incident, activists trying to get things banned as far as freedom of speech, it will be tough. But with the Pete Rock’s, Large Pro’s, DJ Premo’s, Kev Brown’s, Alchemist’s, 9th Wonder’s out there, I think its going to be a turn around. A lot of these producers are supposed to be dropping jewels of their own & for artists as well around September, so I guess we’ll see. In the meantime, KEEP DIGGIN’!
Chicaaaaaaaaaaago maaayne
lupe, common, kanye, rhymefest, twista, kidz in the hall
hahahahhaahah @ whoeva said westcoast..get outta here…west doesn’t bring anything to the table other than rapping about gangs..or “the lame” always rappin bout dre,64’s,bloods,50cent,g-unit,dre,dre n mo dre…get sum creativity den do sumthin because the west is irrelevant as of right now..WHERE IS THE WESTCOAST AT??
the south is running shit right now and will continue to until sumbody does sumthin different
NY needs to come up with some creativity..ppl got tired of hearing them rap about drugs, guns, killing ppl, blah blah blah…
i want to see midwest get its shine next…
Oh yea NY is not doing anything to bring hip-hop back if dere gonna keep making club music like the south
NY jumped on the bandwagon
wuh kind of shit is “lip gloss, make it rain, pour it out, aunt jackie, chicken noodle soup, this is why i’m hot”
[...] What hip hop has been missing 5. New York ? Over the past couple of years, hip-hop has seen southern music rise to prominence with the emergence of some of today?s most notable emcees hailing from the south. It?s no denying the influence the south has made on the hip-hop culture. And although it?s good to hear from the once slept on region, it would be great for hip-hop if New York and the east coast came back to add more diversity to the game. 4. GOD MC ? With the list of top emcees getting shorter every year and your favorite rapper getting older, hip-hop needs a new voice. An emcee that has the talent to put out top-selling albums and at the same time possess enough charismatic appeal to appear on shows like Oprah or Bill O? Reilly to defend a culture that?s always been scrutinized by the media. 3. Classic Albums ? This past year in music, artists and record labels saw album sells plummet due to bootlegging. Whether or not this has lead some rap artists to focus more on outside business ventures than there music (which has hurt the quality of albums) is up for questioning. And like many others, I?m guilty of buying an album off the strength of one single (damn you Rich Boy), then I?m greatly disappointed when I purchase the album and it?s filled with nothing but album fillers. Hip-Hop is definitely in the need of that one classic album. 2. Originality ? Yes, even this still matters in today?s music industry, but it?s definitely hard to come by. When there?s a successful rap artist, industry execs tend to try and clone the artist and duplicate their music by putting out a carbon copy version of the same emcee. This leads to the over saturation of the same type of music, which ultimately hurts hip-hop. 1.Quality Music ? Rather than letting their talent speak for themselves, more and more rap artists are looking to ride the wave of an overly publicized rap beef to sell records. This doesn?t work all the time, (please see the career of Gillie Da Kid for more details). In order for the hip-hop culture to continue to grow and remain relevant in today?s music industry, our artist need to put out quality music. That is and always will be the bottom line. Real MC’s. Niggas who love the craft. That’s why i’m glad the days of the huge monster sales are going away because then it weeds out those rappers only in it for the money. I always hated that “I’m a hustler, not a rapper” shit. Used to piss on those shirts. Real Talk. Until the bullshit niggas get out, and the real get in, Hip-Hop won’t be dead but she in a coma like a motherfucker. My 2 Cents! Holla
maybe thats just it.
Hip-hop gave it all it had natuarally.
Maybe it is dead..it’s just hard to let it go.
It’s not that we don’t have good artists it’s just we seen it all before there are still lots of talented young emcess but they are all have something we’ve heard before thats why the south has so much attention it’s because they have a different sound they live differently than new york and the west do. So i guess its only fair to say that since we don’t have right now all those things that hip-hop is missing just tells us that its dead……………..
Who the hell is Durty South? If anyone know PLEASE tell me!!
to all who represent the east coast west coast and midwest and the dirty south one love. after reading the article i felt a need to comment on it. i love hip hop, rap music, gangsta rap, hustlin music.what ever u may call it. AS for me i from the dirty state of Mississippi and came up on listening to Ice cube, Dr. dre, and snoop and pac they were the first ever rappers that ever got my head bobbing. But this after listening to public enemy, salt and pepper and ll cool j and big daddy kane. maybe i was just young but i did not understand it but i know people from the east coast knew what they were talkin about.later after listenin to mostly west coast rap and down south rap the east coast started to changed their style.See the west coast brought back the 70’s funk to their beats they were on some other sh## and also with geto boys, ugk , 8ball and mjg, master p were adding some that southern flavor. U got to understand the dirty south never changed anything about the music from the 80’s thru 2007 we just got more fire to the lyrics and more exposure bc people from the east coast were changing their style to a more slow flo with tight beats attracting hooks. the same formula the west coast and the south were always on. much repect to ny they were the founders of hip hop but if u dig a little bit deeper were did some of our black music come from. THe gospel, blues, jazz, the beats that come from. Yeah maybe hip hop has dropped a little in numbers bc u cannot fill anyones belly but when hip hop started out it was not in the billions like it is now.The game is not missing anything bc the same formula is their we just got to just keep it going and stop hatin on any particular region. If u hot and people like u /u sell records its just that simple. stop makin excuses why your region’s rapper cannot buy a $500,000 chain he just not hot sry. Lol give shout out to the HYphy movement out here in CALI and all my dirty South affiliates and huge shout out to LIL boosie and Webbie and the whole trill Family
no Durty South is suppose to be an artist living in Ny but from Tn! Is he really hittin like ive been told or what?
faboulus album classic, styles p classic album and dj clue classic
itz been mizzin actual sense. Kids r not listenin 2 tha shii that they gettin all hyped about. (ex:soulja boy,50 cent and yung berg)
WE NEED TO HELP KEEP HIP-HOP ALIVE BY MAKIN 50 RETIRE!!!

Out of them 5 things you listed, I’d definitely agree with some of them especially these:
1) Music- a lot sh#t just ain’t musical. It sounds so wack. I mean it’s like they let kindergarteners make noise in a room, loop it and they say a hook over it and it’s a song on the radio. So definitely music is the key.
2) New York- yeah Hip-hop is missing NYC but a lot of that is NYC’s fault. I live and breathe in Brooklyn, NY- capitol of tha world but headz in NY is just not recording high quality sh@t for the radio. I go to underground venues and the lyrics is hot but the tracks be all gothic and heavy and wack. Ain’t no chick wanna get her groove on to sum gothic sh#t. Headz here in NY need to wake up and say just cuz I wanna keep it real don’t mean it gotta be sumthin that’s all heavy all the time. I’m an old hiphop head and tha thing to me is I think NY gotta do it for themselves. Many of us know a lot of non-NY southern sh#t is wack, headz can’t spit and their tracks is mad corny but as long as it’s selling across the country wack-azz NY stations is gonna play it like it’s good music. We all know it’s about them plantation stations telling them what records to play and which not to play.
3) Top emcees ain’t getting shorter, just their exposure is super-light. There are many very good emcees but the problem is mass media would rather play wack emcees who got big money behind them promoting them.
4) Albums- I don’t think that matters as much. If you’re a real MC you won’t put out wack albums.
5) Originality- I don’t think there is a lack of originality in the artists, only a lack of originality in the radio stations, video shows and mass media that play music.
Jack…
Nice entry. You made some great points….
