Chicago Church Uses Billboards To Denounce Hip Hop

Saint Sabina puts up billboards targeting negative music
Starting today, twenty billboards will be going up throughout the city of Chicago denouncing artists that demean women and perpetuate violence. Some of the billboards are already posted.
Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of Saint Sabina church said, “If we are going to end the violence and the disrespect of women, we must fight every form of negativity, including the music industry.”
The billboards read: “Stop Listening To Trash” naming ten present day disrespectful rappers.
This is the press release the church has on their website. What do they really hope to accomplish with this? If I was one of the rappers I would say than you for the free promotion. The church could of used this money for something more productive.

June 20th, 2007 at 11:27 am
What is wrong with condemning music that promotes violence and degrades music?
June 20th, 2007 at 11:29 am

June 20th, 2007 at 11:33 am
Great idea…STOP LISTENING to hip-hop artist, but let the Bill O’Reiley and Hannity and Colems poison the people with whatever BS they want to. When the church gets the ballz to attack the oppresive powers that be, Ill attend it. Until then Ill be listenin to Ludas release therapy cuz at least he addresses the issues.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:34 am
I’ll listen to whatever the fuck I please thank you very much.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:34 am
That Eminem thing is kinda true. I’m not saying that suing the lord right, but they are wrong for putting those up. Instead of targeting rappers, they may need to tackle some of these lazy ass mothers that allow their kids to listen to adult lyrics.
Adults know how to distinguish right from wrong. Mothers need to be mothers and not friends to their children.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Oh…And for the record…Im against disrespecting our women too, but they just went about it the wrong way.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:36 am
the problem with this is simple. here’s the quote:
“If we are going to end the violence and the disrespect of women, we must fight every form of negativity, including the music industry”
My question is this, music is a reflection of the world…..breaking the mirror won’t change the reflection. You need to change the actual people who are violent, and who disrespect women outside of an art form. If you do that and the music industry still reflects violence and disrespect of women, then it would be cool to attack artists. And another problem is that he states the “music industry”. the last time i checked, Hip hop was not the entire music industry, and if people believe that hip hop is the only genre in music that has lyrics that some view as promoting violence and disrespecting women, then your ignorant to other forms of music. You’ve been hoodwinked, and you need to wake up and realize that this is an attack on people of color and our form of expression.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:39 am
and my question is how are those artists listed “negative rappers”? so who is a “positive rapper”?
June 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am
omg lol i wonder how they came up with the list
June 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am
cosign # 9. this billboard isnt gone change anything. @ # 7 im wonderin why u only included the mothers and not the fathers aswell?
June 20th, 2007 at 11:51 am
The hit the nail on the head with “fat joe”, what a compltete joke (bet he ain’t running aroung callin puerto ricans spics & shit !)
June 20th, 2007 at 11:59 am
YES!!! I can still listen to Jay-Z and Nas!
June 20th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
The ad is obviously put up by a black church and directed towards black people. No black people listen to Eminem, which is why he wasn’t listed. And no black folks watch Bill O’Reilly or SEan Hannity.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
“the last time i checked, Hip hop was not the entire music industry, and if people believe that hip hop is the only genre in music that has lyrics that some view as promoting violence and disrespecting women, then your ignorant to other forms of music.”
This is some of the dumbest shit I have ever read. What other music genre comes anywhere close to the violence and misogny as hip hop? Please, I am waiting for you to tell me.
Some of you idiots are in complete denial. WAKE UP!!!! We have an entire generation of kids who think it is OK to call women bitches and hoes. We have an entire generation of kids who think it is more important to be a baller or a playa than to be educated.
WAKE THE FUCK UP.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:14 pm
#10 Cash are you seriously that fucking stupid? You don’t know what a negative rapper is?? You don’t see anything wrong with rappers who glorify violence and drug dealing and who degrade women as nothing but sexual objects? That doesn’t strike you as not being healthy for young children?
You are a fucking moron.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
This shit is crazy men.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

June 20th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
They didn’t mention other forms of entertainment because other forms of entertainment AREN’T HAVING THE HARMFUL EFFECT ON BLACK PEOPLE THAT HIP HOP IS!!!
Dear God you people are stupid.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
wow thats straight up grimey and by doing that people are still not gonna listen. I go for freedom of speech and if you dont like whats being said on the albums dont buy them or listen to them and parents shouldn’t be letting there 9 year old kids listen to eminem talking about his life and all the physco things he went threw as a kid. Thats why there is a parental advisory on the damn thing so whos wrong the rappers or the parents that just dont give a fuck???? ummmmm
June 20th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
Westside, why am i a moron? explain to me how Luda is a negative rapper? that’s labeling him and putting him into a category that isn’t fair. What about “runaway love”? is that negative? so how can luda be a negative rapper? i can continue down the list of each of the rappers and describe songs where they aren’t displaying their art which can be viewed by some as negative.
You ask what other genre’s come close to the violence and misogny as hip hop. I ask you, where does hip hop get it from? it seems as if people like yourself have this view that hip hop created violence or misogny. WRONG!! that shit was here way before hip hop, but because hip hop is dominated by people of color, and is becoming the dominant figure in music, people in power (majority of them being White) are using their power (money, connections, etc.) to attack hip hop(i.e. Don Imus, virginia tech shooting via Bill O’Rielly, Hannity and Colmes, etc.)
I never said that the art that artists like Lil Wayne or Snoop, T.I. is good or “healthy” for children, but it’s not suppose to be!!!!! You are the moron if you choose to allow your children to listen to music that isn’t for them. It’s up to parents, or legal guardians, teachers, communities to expose our children to other forms of music and not have them tuning into 106 and park doing the “pop lock it drop it” dance and their 8!!!!
June 20th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Furthermore Westside, you come off kind off ignorant making statements such as:
“No black people listen to Eminem” or “no black folks watch Bill O’Reilly or SEan Hannity”
How can you possibly know that every black person does not listen to Eminem. By the fact alone that Eminem was discovered and introduced through Dr. Dre, your statement is ignorant.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
oh yeah and like i said they need to talk about t.v all together in itself. If you target hiphop target pop,rock,r@b,…etc.They got songs in r@b that dudes and females are saying its ok to sleep around and forget to use protection. Pop got there new greatest selling amy winehouse who is telling people not to go to rehab if they have a drinking problem and on top of that she and husband slit they rist and think its cool. Bill ‘o’ reilly is a racist (in my opinion) and is free to say what the hell he wants. Is it because hes white??? The news on every channel shows people dying from Iraq live on t.v and y’all are worried what hiphop is doing. Theres nobody dying in hiphop videos were there showing heads chopped off and dead bodies under white sheets. Im watching the news now and they talking about a some bad shit. 18 month old baby got hit by a woman backing out of her drive way. Where were the parents?????ummmmmm
June 20th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
HIP HOP WILL NVR GO BACK TO ITS ROOT, TO HELL WITH IT….I SAY LET THERE ME A NEW ERA OF MUSIC
June 20th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
this shit is jus straight up stupid. they point everythin on Hip Hop wat bout rock music?? they talk bout the same things so what they wanna do?? get rid of all music cept the country. there dum, they dunt even realize the more they put the rappers out as “negative” the more they gonna shin and bring the game to a higher level. jus kept pushin them stupid fukers.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
where was that at… im from chi… ididnt see that anywhere… idk
June 20th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
This is hilarious. Ever since the Don Immus scandal it has been a 24-hour surveillance on hiphop and or anything affiliated with hiphop. I agree with a lot of the statements that were made.
But one thing people are forgetting besides the fact that these artist have women in the video’s singing along with the comments that everyone feels are so bad. Hiphop didnt start an issue with women. This country had an issue with women way before Hiphop was thought of. Any history book in any class at any school will prove that.
June 20th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
When I listen to rap and I hear them say bytches and hoes…those dont mean anything to mean except the definition…by no means do I feel disrespected by those lyrics because it doesn’t apply to me. People wake up they are just words…if ur not a bytch or a hoe why you give dayum…now if a person puts Vonnie is a bitch in their rap music then I would have a problem with it because then it’s directed at an individual. We have 21 young black men killed in my city alone this year and my city is no longer then a 1 1/2 long. By no means do I think rap music has anything to do with, but I feel those are more important issues to address in your community….Why are so many young black men killing one another….who gives a dayum if some rapper calls nobody a bytch or a hoe….geeesssh. We could use that billboard money to feed the homeless people, contribute the money to Katrina, umm give some of that money to the people who lost love ones in the war, ummm fight crime in your community…ummm reopen recreation centers…I could think numerous things churches could do with the tide money it receives from their members then go after rappers…that is LUDACRIS LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO People get a fuggin LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Start Fighting some REAL ISSUES. And any women that feels disrespected by those words are prolly one themselves…
June 20th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

Believe me, this church doesn’t give a damn about negative rap lyrics. They just wants to cash in on the hype. Everything is about money…

June 21st, 2007 at 3:33 am
What i think is that the people that work in the government are just setting up all these random things to throw us away from the war, like to talk less about it. Who cares about paris going to jail there are people being killed for no reason. Not just to pick on paris but everything out there that is useless info that tv is feeding into our brains. And also why are they trying to stop rapping, its never gonna stop. Rapping is like a crack house there never gonna disappear. as long as theres money out there for it, its gonna happen. Its not like like there hurting anyone, there just using words to express them selfs and make money, just like every other business in this world. On another point in video games and in movies you can live out what there saying in those lyrics so shouldn’t they try to stop movies from being to cruel and video games from being to violent.
Even if we stop them from distribution here there are 7 continents so they can pick anyone of those and start making money there.
June 21st, 2007 at 3:40 am

June 21st, 2007 at 5:59 am
