The Shop Boyz Are The Latest Victim Of Today’s Music Trend

“Party Like A Rockstar,” was one of the most popular songs of the last few months, only behind, “Umbrella,” in the urban charts. Yet when it is time to sell records, they only do little over 50,000 for the first week. Is it because everybody is just buying/downloading the single and saying F the album? What does it take for the average consumer to feel compelled to cope the album? Should artist work on dropping at least 2 solid singles at or around the time of release? What does it take for you to give a new artist a chance, cause it is clear one hit song won’t do the trick.

Part of the problem is labels don’t develop artist anymore. They get hype of the success of a single and think their job is done. It’s not that easy, you got to give consumers reason to believe the album will be solid. These days people just think rappers are after ringtone money and the album will be trash. Labels need to realize it takes time to build a relationship between artist and the fans. T.I. first album didn’t do very good at all but look at where he is at now. If you feel an artist is worthwhile, you have to put in the time and money to mold them into stars. Otherwise you will just keep putting out one hit wonders.

This post isn’t only about the Shop Boyz, but all the new artist coming out with it singles. Even rappers that been in the game for a while like Fat Joe.

They ALBUM Is trash.
they basically tryna ride the success of the rockstar thing and pile into a album about it. I cant hate tho.. they made it out the hood, but damn, labels aint even interested no more. they jus goin for that almighty dollar while niggas like them are signing they life away for 15 secs in the spotlight. :-/

It takes more than one single to get someone to buy ur shit, unless ur a vet and got it like that, what other song do the shop boyz got out? Just party like a rockstar, dont expect people to waste their money on a whole album when you only got one hot song out, thats why they just buy singles. Also I agree they need to allow artists to grow into stars and be patient, they want them to be superstars over night. Also lets not forget, the music has to be quality.

I just had an epiphany….THERE AINT MUCH MORE WE CAN EXPECT FROM HIP-HOP!!!! 9th wonder said it best when he recommended that if you dont like the music thats out there now, go back and support the artist that you DO like…Just a couple weeks ago i found myself in the record store with nothing worth buying. So I copped that Lost Boyz “Legal Drug Money” album. 1996 shit. Kiddie hip-hop deserves kiddie sales. And real hip-hop needs our support. Im just glad Lupe went platinum….

I cosign with blaze because Nas put out Hip Hop is dead the single and black republicans none which receive airplay out of New York but it still manage to sell pass gold status and nearing platinum status. so the bubble gum snap rock southern shit aint gonna do nothing but give an artist(s) one good album and a flopped album.

How many of you have a bought an album off of the strength of one single only to find the rest of the album is garbage? Yep, you need prove to me that the album is a classic before I buy it. Especailly when I can hear the whole album online.

There’s nothing worst than listening to a down south rapper speak in an interview. Lol

One single will not help you sell an album, artist always get lucky with one hot single then they get stupid and think people will buy their album. A new artist should do features on other artist songs, mainly artist outside of their genre - And they should have at least 2-3 singles IMO.

People have no idea how to market (Pimp) themselves nowadays.

Artist Development goes to shit now adays. These new A&R’a are only looking to get the quick buck nowadays thats why HIP HOP is dead. The craft is not really respected anymore.

Ciara wrote on June 27th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

The labels know what they are doing when they sign artists like the Shop Boyz. When these singles create mad hype, the labels jump on it because its a quick buck to grab. They don’t expect these artists to do anything else because they don’t want them to. Everybody knew they were just that single…

The way albums are selling is not a new phenomenom Ima drop knowledge….first off albums sales slump due to an ongoing advancement n technology,it happend to the 8track sales went down once records came, record sales went down when the tape came n like wise it was only a matter of time b4 cd sales declined now we have ipods,mp3,and other shit’s all the industry needs to figure out is how to charge for downloads n other thing that people will be willing to pay for,but not to completely rule this out alotta rappers these days is hot garbage, church.

ross wrote on June 27th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

yo why dont we get threads like this about why good rap isnt selling? realtalk, i think ur awesome but why are u stopping to ask this question now about the shop boys? the shop boys are awful by any standards.

anyway, my other question is why is it that for so many years buying an album is a gamble. most people, let alone kids who are the demographic, dont want to gamble with their hard earned 15 bucks. its a wholly ridiculous concept, if you ask me, to let me hear one song off a cd then ask me to buy it. i fully admit that if i hear about an artist, ill download his album first to check it out. if its a solid album ill buy it and support the artist. to do otherwise seems stupid to me.

The premise of your piece is completely right, but it is even more problematic than that. As an artist myself, and a Hip Hop fan, the issue, as I see it, is that much of today’s artist’s have no identity. Can you tell me the names of the member’s of The Shop Boyz? How about the memebers of D4L? No, right? Guess what? Neither can anybody else. Them niggas could walk right in front of you in the street and you wouldn’t know who the fukk them clowns are.

What record labels underestimate is the importance of the connection between an artist or act and their connection to an audience. When purchasing an album, you are buying admission into an artist’s world. This is true in any genre, but particularly so in Hip Hop where a premium is placed on authenticity and experience. Shallow rappers, release shallow albums and exhibit a shallow sales performance in the market place.

Today’s music is flooded with 1 hit wonders. Lyor Cohen, while at Def Jam, remarked that he only looked to sign “stars”. Hate or Love Young Jeezy, Jim Jones, Nas or Jay-Z, but these people (and a few others) are “stars” that engage their core audience and represent something greater than music to their fans. Acts like Mims, Jibbs and others are not. Case in point: Busta Rhymes is a “star” or, at least, was one. However, he lost his core audience when he attempted to change his entire identity. Gone was the wild, party persona and in came the hard rock, street cat pose. He left his own well established and unique lane and tried to compete with the real “gangsters” (musically speaking) and lost terribly.

Of course we could blame it on ringtones and illegal downloading, but the major factor is that niggas aint making albums worth investing in anymore. I do think that it’s a great time for artists like me though. No too long ago, major record labels were not signing New York acts at all because the South was so strong. Now, nothing is really selling, which means that anything is possible. The formula needs to be discarded and we, as artists, need to start over. It’s all about speaking truth to the masses and identifying who you are and what you stand for. It’s the new artist’s jobs to make compelling music and to stop taking the easy way out and trying to make disposable “hit” songs and it’s the job of blogs, like this 1, to recognize real talent and to reward artists who really need that exposure. Don’t worry about The Shop Boyz and niggas like that, they’ve got a record label behind them and PR people and what not, they’ll get whatever shine that they can. This is not a regional thing, this is about us stopping all of the complaining and whining and shaping our reality as Hip Hop. You’ve gotta seperate the real from the fake and, honestly, not everyone who is good at “spittin’” will make a good super star … that’s just the nature of entertainment yo. It is what it is.

Oh boy….I dont know. Basically you said it, they are all one hit wonders. It’s true I don’t think I have limewired (oops) one CD and thought it was worth purchasing. Haha, it’s true, some artists dont have the staying power. It’s called hype, and hype gets you nothing but a hit single if your shit ain’t tight. Unless we end free downloading, the world will be ever so hard on these poor new artists.

^^^^^true spit. i was just gonna say niggas need to stop comin out wit bullshit, but i like what u said better LOL

@ #22: doggs, we aint went nowhere? smh when will niggas realize that hip hop is always going to end up coming back to new york. we live and breathe this hip hop shit. when u walk down the street in new york, you will see niggas on the corner startin a rap cypher. when u walk down the street in atlanta, you will see niggas on the corner snappin dey fingers and thinkin of catchy hooks and dances. the raps that they will think of later is just filler. i was just in atlanta a few days ago (the strip clubs was CRAZY) and i seen it. i dont wanna take nuthin away from da south, cuz i got love fa yall niggas, but yall cant do it like we do it doggs. yall gotta different type of music, and some of it is cool, but its not hip hop. trap music, yeah. club music, yeah. strip club music, most definitely. but if a nigga wanna hear some lyrics, he aint gonna listen to TI cd, or luda cd for that matter. hip hop is lyric based, and the shit down south is the exact opposite of that. and if u wanna talk about beats, dj premier dont wanna make no beats for no down south rappers, and he’s the best hip hop dj of all time. that should tell u sumthin

Shop boys can make there money off touring and endorsements, they need another smash because if you check it they came out on there own with no collabos and no one knows which music camp they rep, so that in its own right is an accomplishment, that yung berg kid is also coming out on his own and i think that song is hot in da club, radio and the top music networks

yeah number 27 came with the real and what everybody is thinkin about. Every artist in the game should put their sweat and tears into making a classic album…I really thought about it I really wouldn’t recognize any of the shop boys if I saw them on the streets…They look too ordinary…They are not setting any trends or anything…Look at Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor now thats a new Artist and when you listen to his mixtape before his album came out…He killed all the Gorillaz’s beats…He proved to us that his album was worth buying and YES he murdered that album…Thats how every new artist should try and come out with….Classic shit..
