Album Review: R. Kelly/Double Up
Reviewed By: Clark Kent
The self-proclaimed “King of R&B” is back with his latest album, Double Up.
Packed with a host of guest appearances and superb production, it’s a pretty safe bet to put all of your money on Kells….double or nothing.
Hip-Hop + R&B = Double Up
If you’re looking for that classic R&B album that R.Kelly has made so many times in the past, better luck next time. From the start of the album the Swizz Beatz produced “The Champ”, sets the tone which is for the most part a hip-hop influenced album. Rappers T.I., Nelly, and Snoop Dogg, all tag along for the ride with their guest appearances, and even Jim Jones would be proud of the Ludacris featured, “Rock Star”- where Kid Rock lends his guitar and R.Kelly chants, “You’re a rock star baby!”, and professes the sexscapades of a rock star. H-Town’s Chamillionaire, joins R.Kelly on the song, “Get Dirty”- an in the strip club song that’ll have everyone making it rain by the end of the night. With all of the guest rap appearances and lyrics like:”Purple phantom dip low/Open up that closet door/Fresh shoes, fresh clothes”- did R.Kelly leave room for any R&B?
R. Kelly does in fact make his way back to the ladies heart. Proving that he hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to R&B, vintage R.Kelly arrives in the form of the songs, “Sex Planet”, “Having a Baby”, and “The Zoo”- a song where Kelly compares his love making to animals in the jungle. On the heartfelt, “Rise Up”- a tribute to the students of Virginia Tech, Kelly again delivers as only he can when it comes to life’s tribulations. The most standout R&B track on the album would have to be the Keyshia Cole and Polow Da Don featured, “Best Friend”. Keyshia and Polo make for great players in this story as Kelly channels his “trapped in the closet” storytelling, and accuses his girlfriend of cheating with his best friend during his incarceration. It’s on songs like this, and where R.Kelly features other artists, Double Up becomes an enjoyable album to listen to.
The Conclusion
Throughout the album, R. Kelly switches from thug to concerned husband. At times this is entertaining, but there also times you might want him to pick one of his split personalities. But backed by stellar production and the ability to write songs people can relate to, Double Up is definitely worth listening to and seeing which ego prevails.
R.Kelly’s talent > than his ego.

I agree, R. Kelly has way too many Featured artists on this album and although the album has grown on me, this is one of his worse albums to date. Too many featured artists takes away from the talent that R. Kelly actually does possess. I feel that as a grown man, R. Kelly needs to give up chasing on the women and partying. As stated in the review, he tends to have that double personalities and he honestly needs to choose which one he needs to go with. This man is talented but I feel on here he just said “fuck it’ I’m rich anyways but hopefully he remembers his fans along the way before he releases gibberish like this.

Ive come to learn that people hate just to hate and thats so played out…the album is hot regardless of how you feel about him as a person. He could possibly be the best R&B male singer ever…and yes I said that…this man has been a year maker for YEARS!!!!!!!! He has penned hits for not only himself but a list of others…yea he got a little extra with the guest apperances but why do we always feel like he needs to be boxed into one thing all the time??? We can watch other raps venture out and so other things besides make albums like acting wheich half of them can and making wack ass clothing lines but R. Kelly does a hip hop song and you guys are upset please!!!!!!!!!!!
Hate him or love him the man is a musical genius!!!
June 7th, 2007 at 6:44 am
“yall tell me whats r&b without the R”
-Kellz
June 7th, 2007 at 11:46 am
I agree^^^^^ R Kelly is the R in R&B
June 7th, 2007 at 11:57 am
I agree with tintin. Also, this album made me feel like R. Kelly forgot for a minute about his fans and what made him the King of R&B…..I felt most of the songs on Double Up were not the Kells we have grown to know. I’m disappointed because I’m A Flirt is a hot record and I think thats why it sold as well as it did because we expect nothing but hits from him but that’s not what we got. Although Real Talk is the shit….I love that song, overall I’m just glad I didn’t pay more than the $9.98 + tax for it.
June 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
