I really wasnt that offended by this comment, maybe because i’m just a black male and not a female. But I find it funny that when a black person makes fun of a white person, its no problem, but when a white person does the EXACT same thing, all hell breaks loose. The point here esp. those trying to say “hey if a black person said this it would’ve been okay” (or the reference to Chris Rock who is a COMEDIAN not a journalist which is two different things, just like the actions of a pro-athelete are not judged the same as in my workplace) is that you are assuming that “tit for tat” should be the principles of our society. RACISM is not a 2 way street. There is NO SUCH THING AS “REVERSE RACISM”. Ur either racist or bigot’d or not, period. And Imus is bigoted. Regardless on if a black person can call another black person a “nigga” or if a white person can, that arguement is mutually exclusive, NOT RELATED.
As being a paid journalist on air it is up to NBC the actions they take. Just like it is up to the NFL to kick someone out their leauge for beating their wife. It is up to the institution. Even idiots have the right to work, you (the consumer) have the right to not watch (i.e. watch the commercials that pay for his show) his show. U have the right to call for his firing and protest. I do believe that everyone has their sterotypes of other races, genders, people and i do believe that someone can be a bigot and/or racist and truly change. Personally i feel he made this comment in jest, i think there were racial overtones (would he have called an unattractive white team “nappy headed”, if he called them “poor white trash” or “honky” i would be making all the same statements defending the white girls), i think his apology was probably 75% corporate america telling him to do so and 25% of him being remorseful. Unfortunately “money talks and bullshit walks” and Imus makes MSNBC $$$ and it is their right to keep or fire him. Only in time will his actions truely reflect his feelings from this incident.

As a black female, I found it increasingly offensive. I would find it offensive if it came out of a Black, Red, or White man’s mouth. What I have a problem with is that some people are getting upset about calling Black women ‘hoes’ when many do it everyday. Its a sad world when a man can’t say ‘woman’ but can say ‘bitch’ or ‘ho’. What Imus said was totally inappropriate. Whether it was true, whether he has a right to say it or not. As a radio personality talking on a national show regulated by the FCC, Imus CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT say things derogatory and discriminative about other people. This is not the first incident where Imus has put his foot too far up his ass. This is just the first time that there was such a huge backlash. But this is what keeps his ratings up and will ironically actually help him keep his job.
As far as the comments made by 5,9,12, etc. saying that if it was a black person talking about a white person they would get away with it, is totally ridiculous. Since when have black people EVER been on the beneficial side of a double standard?? Black people can say what they want on the streets. But when you are paid by a corporate entity like NBC and shoot your mouth off, whether you’re white or black, you’re going to be held accountable for your actions (hopefully). No matter what your personal opinion is on a person’s physical characteristics you should and must display professionalism, and integrity. Imus showed neither.
