Read Between The Lines: I Respect the Shooter- Jay-Z
I’m from the era where niggaz don’t snitch
You from the era where snitchin’ is the shit
I’m afraid of the future (why?)
Y’all respect the one who got shot,
I respect the shooter
I don’t know, ever since I heard this line it rubbed me the wrong way. I made a little comment about in the VA post but decided to edit it out. I’m not stupid, I know what Jay-Z is saying but I don’t like the message. If it was meant to diss 50/Camron or not, I can’t cosign saying you respect the shooters. To me shooters shouldn’t be respected. Why respect someone that takes deadly force on someone usually unarmed. There is no honor in settling a dispute with gun play. Jay-Z needs to realize a lot of kids out there listen to his words, and will take things out of context. What opinions do you guys have?
Also this is a new thing I will be doing, if you guys got lyrics that stand out to you, email them to me and I might post it up.

Mmmm…thats just the hip hop mumbo jumbo. I think its saying since there a lot of dudes come out saying they been shot so many times and I think hes saying that is WACK so he said something to ruffle the feathers in the hip hop world.
April 17th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
im sure that was directed to camron
April 17th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
i dont think jay mean respect the shooter littrally… i dont think he tips his hat off to cats who bust off…pause…. but respects them knowin that if he was in an altercation whit a “shooter” he wouldnt do anything to get popped…. aint no one gon say “show him some respect cuz he shoots niggas” but “show some respect and dont do nothing stupid because he aint affraid to pop off”… n in the 50 ( if he is talkin bout 50 i hoped he was talkin bout cam)or cam case cats show them respect like they really gon pop off if some one get on they bad side …
April 17th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
yeh grits thas what i thought 2
April 17th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Well its the truth, why do all these rappers get shot but never shoot back?? 50?? no return fire. Fabolous? etc, etc. Always talking about bustin in they songs, always seem to get caught on that “firearm posstion” charge, but then one day they get shot by soem punk and they never shot back. Like Cam. Thats what hov was talking about. If your life is in danger and you let yoru gun off I respect that. If someone pulls a hammer and you shoot him first I respect that, but if you shoot an unarmed person thats bull, and i dont respect it.
April 17th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Man all Hov is saying is if your in a room with a guy who has been shot nine times and a guy who has shot nine people, which guy are you going to respect and keep your eye on?
April 17th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
you acting all emotional like a bitch, jay just saying its a shame kids look up to niggas that get shot as gangsta when they prolly got popped faking while the real gangsta was the one who busts off, dude in va was a bitch tripping offa female not no hood shit so slow down
April 17th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Well its the truth, why do all these rappers get shot but never shoot back?? 50?
the guy that shot him died like 2 weeks later
April 17th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
men lie…
women lie…
bullets don’t
April 17th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
Yep…I think we should Blame hip hop for the shooting in VA. We should blame hip hop for gun violence. We should blame hip hop for the war in Iraq…let’s blame 50 cent for the war in Afghanistan. Let’s blame Jay Z for what Don Imus said about nappy headed hoes. Let’s blame KRS One for the 911. Let’s blame Dipset for Bush stealing the election. Let’s blame hip hop for the broken borders we have. Hell…I’m even thinking about blaming hip hop all the ills of America. Go ahead jump on the bandwagon.
April 17th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
I KNOW WHAT JAY IS SAYING,A SHOOTER IS A COWARD YES IT’S TRUE,BUT A SHOOTER,IS ALSO A MOTHER FUCKER WHO IS SYUPID ENOUGH TO TAKE A LIFE SO YOU GOTTA RESPECT A CRAZY MOTHER FUCKER.
April 17th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Anybody that shoots someone, especially over something trivial is a punk up and down…
April 17th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
I jus wanna say….thanks king blair for clearing that up….this dude is a fool for thinking some stupid shit like that….so now Everyone lets thank JAY-Z For The Massacre that occurred in V-Tech
April 17th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
I don’t think Hov actually meant what he said literally. Just a kind of a jab at rappers who talk about busting caps…never bust nothin’ back.
Now, here’s my take on it. The first time I heard it, correct me if I’m completely off base but I thought it was directed at Lil Wayne at the same time as well.
I understood it was a diss to certain rappers but I also thought it might have been a compliment to Weezy at the same time.
Cuz if I remember right, Weezy already had made some comments about the best rapper alive shit, not neccessarily the one he better than jay, but that he was one of the best out.
So I thought Jay said
I’m afraid of the future (why?)
Y’all respect the one who got shot,
I respect the shooter
And then the last two lines kind of a “an okay, I get you” to Weezy cuz I don’t know if Hov has said anything against Weezy, least I havent heard anything him dissing Weezy. So maybe it was kind of a nod, like respect for the balls to say something of the sort…
Now am I trippin’ or maybe there is some far off connection there?
April 17th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
i dun know one little kid that listens to kingdom come
April 17th, 2007 at 6:25 pm
i thot he was talkin about CAMROn
he got shot wen niggas tried to jack his lambo in miami
April 17th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Jay was goin at CAM cuase cam said somebody from ROCAFELLA threw up the ROC and fired shots.
April 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
The problem with our people today is that have been blind by the media and now starting to sound like CNN or Bill O’Riley. I can not believe because of what happen in VA you decide to depict Jay Z music to make us look like the victim. I would respect a shooter because he have more gust than me and I don’t have the courage to do it. Like anybody else they respect the one who shows more power. I am not saying it is right but reality must hit us all, there is time when some people deserve to get shot but we are too scared.
April 17th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
yes jay talking bout cam,cuz cam an dipset talk all this kuffi smacking shit an when the niggas rolled up and popped them thangs in his ass all that killa shit went out the window he had a fleet of 6 cars an none of them dudes shot nothing. i live in d.c. all niggas on the radio was luaghing how pedestrians could hear cam scream like a bitch real talk
April 17th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
u guys don’t get it… respecting the shooter has nothing to do with gun play… its a metaphor for actions in life IMO.
Respecting the shooter is having respect for people who take action in life first, people that make moves and don’t hold back.
Respecting the one that got shot is giving props to a sheep, and being another face in the crowd.
April 17th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
ofcourse that line is gonna rub you wrong considering what happened in VT….like talib said “I dont think jay means respect the shooter littrally”……nowadays people think they the realest niggas out cause they’ve been shot…..when in reality its that nigga that shot you who niggas dont wanna mess with cause he’s done real things…..nobodies glorifing the shooter we just saying don’t f*** with that dude he will clap at you.
April 17th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Stop reading into what rappers say so closely!!!!!!!!! I knew jay said it but i didnt care and dont get into all that desensitization shit
April 17th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
It’s unfortunate that Mr. Carter’s lyrics are so accurate. I taught in Baltimore City schools for seven years. And I recall having a conversation with my students about the type of individuals that they idolize. It was astounding to me that they included individuals who had suffered from gun shot wounds. I wish that I was lying when I say that, many of my students themselves said that they would like to be shot one day. And of course live to tell about it. When asked “why” they said: to be respected, to be feared, to prove their toughness, one young man even said, to receive a cool nickname such as “animal.” I said “DAMN!” And these were third grade students.
April 17th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Wow Cornell. People this has nothing to do with the Virginia shooting or Don Imus, ever since I heard the line and I had a problem with it. I really don’t think he was going the metaphor route with this line, its up to interpretation.
April 17th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
REALTALK,
IT’S NOT JAY Z’S FAULT THAT KIDS ARE NOT GOING TO SCHOOL AND LEARNING THE IMPORTANCE/SIGNIFICANCE OF DEFINITIONS , SYNONMS, METAPHORS, DOUBLE ENTENDRE AND… IN MANY SITUATIONS, IN REGARD TO POETRY ONE MUST BREAK THE WORDS DOWN, IF YOU WILL. YOU CAN NOT TAKE THINGS AS LITERAL AS THEY SOUND. HOW DO TYRANTS EARN RESPECT? THROUGH FEAR. SOME CEZARS HAVE RULED THROUGH FEAR RATHER THAN LOVE AND THIS FEAR CAUSED SUBORDINATES TO RESPECT HIM THROUGH FEAR WHEN IN FACT HE MAY BE A COWARD. BUT IN THE HOOD WE TEND TO RESPECT THE ONE WHO GOT SHOT, GLORIFYING HIS OR HER SITUATION. AND BECAUSE HE’S BEEN SHOT SO MANY TIMES SOME OF US THINK THAT HE IS A TUFF GUY AND SHOULD BE FEARED OR RESPECTED BECAUSE HE LEADS A LIFE THAT GETS HIM SHOT AT. YOU KNOW HOW NIGGAS IN THE HOOD BRAG ABOUT BEING A THUG. DEFINITION OF THUG:
1. a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer.
2. (sometimes initial capital letter) one of a former group of professional robbers and murderers in India who strangled their victims.
THE HOOD HAS CHANGED THE DEFINITION OF A THUG. THERE ARE PEEPS PROCLAIMING THUG WHEN THEY ONLY DRESS LIKE WHAT THEY THINK IS A THUG.
IN SUMMATION. YAW RESPECT(GLORIFY AND OR FEAR) THE ONE WHO GOT SHOT, I RESPECT ( FEAR, CHECKING FOR, WATCHING OUT FOR, STAYING ON HIS GOOD SIDE) THE SHOOTER. RATHER THAN RESPECTING SOMEONE WHO GOT SHOT FOR REAPING WHAT HE SOES.
NAW HES NOT TALKING ABOUT CAM REALLY CAUSE NO ONE RESPECTS CAMRON BUT THEY DID RESPECT 50. ANOTHER JAB AT 50.” AND NO I AINT GET SHOT UP A WHOLE BUNCH OF TIMES AND MAKE UP SHIT IN A WHOLE BUNCH OF RHYMES.” ALTHOUGH I DID HEAR HOV FIRST SAY THAT CAM DRY SNITCHED ON HIM REGARDING THE ROC SIGN BEING THROWN UP AFTER CAM GOT SHOT, THEN HE UPGRADED IT TO A FULL SNITCH. BUT HE ADDRESSED THAT IN DIG A WHOLE. IT’S 50 CAUSE RESPECT OR FEAR IN COMMON AND MODERN DAY IS SOMETIME SHOWN THROUGH GRATIFICATION AND A FALSE ADMIRATION AND THIS FALSE ADMIRATION WAS REFLECTED IN ALBUM SALES. 50 BUILT UP THIS REALLY BIG AND AMBIGUOUS CAMPAIGN GLORIFYING HIS INJURIES AND PORTRAYED THE ROLE OF A TUFF GUY WITH LYRICS AND NEGATIVE IMAGES OF GUNS AND VIOLENCE IN HIS VIDEOS TO MAKE YOU THINK THAT HE SHOULD BE FEARED. HE CAME OUT WITH VIDEOS OF HIM IN THE GYM DEPICTING HIM AS UNSTOPPABLE AND HE BASICALLY TOLD US ALL THAT HE WAS THE ONE THAT NEEDED TO BE WATCHED OUT FOR BUT YOUR RESPECT FOR CAM OR 50 IS TRASH BECAUSE IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT EITHER WILL SHOOT SOMEONE. IF 50 WAS SHOOTING BACK HE WOULDNT HAVE GOTTEN SHOT 9 TIMES.
AND THE DEFINITION OF GANGSTER IS: A member of an organized group of criminals; a racketeer.
ITS WHAT EVER
HE’S TALKING ABOUT WEASEL IN THE LAST VERSE OF
‘IT’S ALL THE SAME” THE CLUE IS EVERYTIME HE SAYS LIL.
April 17th, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Jay sayin that he tried of those who puttin niggas on a pedestal for gettin shot like 9 times…I could have wrote that line like 5 years ago cause I was tired of it then. Niggas always blowin stupid shyt up talkin bout how they got shot, so… I respect the shooter…about time someone put my thoughts out there for everyone to hear…maybe these wanstas will get somewhere an sit down
April 17th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
man you don’t have to like what he says. he said it. it is what is. ya’ll wont understand anyway because ya’ll don’t come from the era he came from, real G’s respect real G’s, thats it, it is not for ya’ll to understand if u aint a G, trust me i am not just talkn out of my ass.
April 17th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
nah man, jigga is the man
is trying to say like, u respect 50 (for example), but he respects the one who shotted 50 because he had balls, and showed the world that 50, who thinks he is the bauss, the g, the gangsta, the undefeated, received some bullets
April 17th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
I think you’re taking the lyrics out of context. I mean hip-hop has always been a metaphorical way for rapper’s to get at each other. You can’t take everything rapper’s say literally, they’re like poets and speak figuratively. I believe jigga (best rapper in the world) was speaking about the fact that everyone and their momma started listening to 50 or heard about him because he got shot “9″ times. I mean his first album was hot no doubt but without the gun introduction he’s just another rapper. It’s sad that rappers now have to have some type of come-up story that’s somehow related to them almost dyin in order to be hott…do i believe there are idiots out there that act out whatever they hear YES…but we cant blame jigga or any rapper on that matter for people’s actions…i mean Arnold Shwarzenagger was the terminator and visually he killed more people than all rappers have ever mentioned in there lyrics…know wat i sayiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin
April 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Are u serious .. nonsences come on REAL TAlk keep it 100 you sound like bill O’ Fagit…..you are taken lyrics way out of context chill please dont kill hip hop on some hip hop kills people type shit …..
April 17th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
Post #6 (Marq) Pretty much has it on point. I have no clue why ppl are typing their life stories. It comes down to what Marq basically said… who would you respect/keep your eye on?
April 17th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
Like I said If your life is being threatened by a firearm or shank you gotta let off your hammer. But If its over petty things, then yes I beleive shooting someone is cowerdly especially when they are completely unarmed and not fucin with you.
BUT THATS BESIDES THE POINT, SO WHAT, JAY Z SAID THAT. WHILE YOUR AT IT, REAL TALK, WHY DON’T YOU GO AHEAD AND POST THE OTHER 1232323912324 LINES ADVOCATING VIOLENCE FROM OTHER RAPPERS. HOV WAS TALKING TO THESE RAPPERS WHO GET SHOT AND BRAG ABOUT IT. THATS WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. HE WASNT TALKING TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, HIS LINE WASnt intended TO PROMOTE VIOLENCE.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
All I know is I don’t respect a man that takes the life of someones son or daughter. Yes like some of u said the shooter is someone u might want to keep one eye open for (and/or fear) but fear and respect are not the same.
Jay was “trying” to take a jab and I think for ppl like me and others he shot himself in the foot because saying he respects the shooter is not a good look no matter how you look at it. Hov had a point about not respecting someone cause they got shot but then the point was lost by saying he respects the shooter. Respect is earned and in my book fuck gettin shot up and fuck taking another mans life, neither one of those things alone are gonna make me respect someone. He was lazy with those lyrics…he was lazy with that whole album but thats a whole nother topic. Anyone still listening to Kingdom Come? I forgot about the lyrics til u mentioned them.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
In today’s society, you shoot someone over fear, NOT to be feared. I think it is referring to that change. You fear the man that’s been shot rather than the man that’s done the shooting. This is if you look at it for its literal sense
April 17th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
i think its a reflection of the 80s mentality not many of us still around i grew up when wearing all black was cool now its extra bright pink this manicure that metrosexual garbage i think he was speaking on everybody going crazy thinking that the gangsters walking around with all these bullets holes telling war stories but really not bussing that gun u not gangster because u talk shit and get shot for it
April 17th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
i agree wit jay-z. i respect the shooter. thats who all the respect goes to. the nigga who got shot aint supposed to get no respect. he supposed to be embarrassed that he got shot and didnt shoot back. niggas is supposed to call him a bitch until he retaliates. thats just the way its supposed to be, im not saying its right or wrong
April 17th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
i got one for you:
lil wayne-
“i rock a nigga boat then speed off in a speed boat”
“i vow to never fall like soap on a rope”
“u bitch ass niggas can suck a dick and swallow the cum”
“damn right i kissed my daddy”
wayne is a homo hahahahahahahaha
April 17th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
WHOA
YOU R RIGHT ABOUT WEASEL. SEE HE IS A FRAUD CAUSE HE DOESNT HAVE (DOUBLE ENYENDRE) HAVE A TOUGH BONES IN HIS BONEY ASS BODY. HE AINT SHOOTING NOBODY YET HE GLORIFIES VIOLENCE AND THE USE OF DRUGS IN HIS LYRICS. FUCK THIS POST AND YOUR BAD INTERPRITATION. WHAT ABOUT OPRAH TODAY? WHAT ABOUT MAKING THE RECORD COMPANIES SENSOR RECORDS BEING PLAYED ON TV AND RADIO. DONT GIVE PEEPS WITH LYRICS THAT CONDONE DRUG DEALING AND KILLING BUDGETS. WE KNOW THAT KIDS WILL GET WHAT THE WANT HOW EVER THEY CAN. BUT IF YOU TAKE THISSHIT OFF OF TV AND RADIO, WE CAN BEGIN TO UNLEARN OUR YOUTH IN REGARD TO SO MUCH NEGATIVITY. WE KNOW THAT ITS STILL GOING TO EXIST BUT TAKE IT OUT OF THE EYES OF TODDLERS.
April 18th, 2007 at 12:53 am
In today’s society, you shoot someone over fear, NOT to be feared. I think it is referring to that change. You fear the man that’s been shot rather than the man that’s done the shooting. This is if you look at it for its literal sense
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Well honestly that only applies to like 20% of the society, I see where your going. But please, how many people shoot someone because they are scared. Few, Most are acts of vengance, or a way to send a message. Lets look into organized crime mobs, hitmen, niggas that really did shit. I think your talking about the “rapper society” when you mention something like that. So yes Hov is talking to the rapper society. Not the general public.
April 18th, 2007 at 3:18 am
WELL…WHY DON’T WE BLAME HIP HOP FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ. LET’S BLAME 50 CENT FOR YOUR KIDS NOT GOING TO SCHOOL. I GOTTA BLAME HIP HOP FOR GEORGE BUSH WINNING THE ELECTION. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BLAME JAY Z FOR ME NOT BEING A MILLIONAIRE.
BY THE WAY…YOU KNOW I GOTTA BLAME RUN DMC FOR THE WAY BLACK PEOPLE TALK. LETS BLAME SALT N PEPA FOR TEENAGE PREGNANCY IN URBAN AMERICA.
GUESS WHO STARTED THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN…YEP YOU GUESSED IT…HIP HOP.
I’M THINKING HIP HOP HAD TO HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN THE PRIEST MOLESTING CHILDREN(must have listened to one to many EMINEM records)
WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER AND BAN HIP HOP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE….LMAO.(FUCKING LAMES..STOP BLAMING HIP HOP AND TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS PEOPLE)
HIP HOP IS ENTERTAINMENT, NOT A DOCUMENTARY. JUST LIKE THE MOVIES OR A PLAY. THESE DUDES ARE ACTORS, THEY MAY HAVE DONE WRONG IN THERE PAST, BUT NOW THEY SELL RECORDS AND DOWNLOADS. AS LONG AS YOU WHITE SUBURBAN KIDS ARE BUYING IT…WE WILL SUPPLY IT. CHANGE YOUR TASTE OF CONSUMPTION AND WE WILL CHANGE PRODUCTION.
P.S. YOU DON’T SEE THEM BLAMING “SMOKING ACES” FOR GUN VIOLENCE IN THE INNER CITY. BUT LETS’ BLAME JAY Z FOR RESPCETING THE SHOOTER.lOL
April 18th, 2007 at 4:12 am

April 18th, 2007 at 5:56 am
You get that song from 30 the new 20 rite?
I think he was dissin lil wayne, Because lil wayne has a single called shooter with robin thicke, and the song was about him saying he is the shooter and that they want him to surrender, something like that. I dont think its a diss to 50/camron but 50 has said some thing abouts jay’z.
April 18th, 2007 at 6:01 am
yes, the fisrt time i heard it, I thought it was directed towards weezy, Saying hes been in the game longer, hes older and know more than him.
April 18th, 2007 at 6:56 am
I feel like Jay was right. He is his own man, everybody is not soft(bytch made). Kids these days got it backwards. An to be honest when I think about it he is directing it to cam’ron. All these muthafucas out here is feeling dip-set too much. How many time have you seem them dip-set niccas in crazy situation when they got treated like a bytch. I can recall 4 or 5 times and yet ppl respect the bytch in them. All Jay is saying is he don’t want to see a future when evryone is like them niggas. If evryone is soft who’s gonna fight for wat’s right. Them dip-set niggas has evrybody blinded. I don’t know how they are doing it but they are doing a damn good job of it.

April 18th, 2007 at 7:28 am
He’s just saying yall respect a rapper for getting shot so many times, when that rapper will talk junk about how gangsta he is, how he’s dumpin shots or how he’s really live like that, when he obviously ain’t doin it like that. It gets taken out of context a little, if you think it applies to the shit goin down in VA, then I can’t agree with you.
It’s like when Nas said hip hop is dead, everyone twisted what he said and didn’t really take the time to get what he meant, even though a statement like “Hip Hop is Dead” seems pretty one dimensional with no meaning behind it.. but it’s hiphop sometimes you gotta read into it a bit more.
April 18th, 2007 at 7:41 am
Lets not get carry away on this. I know he feels some type of way cause what happen in VA. Why wasnt this posted three weeks ago or when it first came out? I live in Philly and I havent read anything on here about us. 111 and counting..Forget Jay-Z what he said. Rap been talking gun play for the longest and now it has to be about what he said? No it shouldn’t. Don’t nobody in their right mind respect a shooter. He was dissing another rapper wich is a waste of time among all of them. Iraq we are losing thousands of young people and what are we doing? 33, 111, 3000. Lets get tougher gun laws and get some help in philly and other states to stop killing among each other..It won’t be the last cause its so many sick people out here, we have to protect our kids and make the law tough to get a gun.
April 18th, 2007 at 8:01 am
I lived in VA for 6 years b/n the ages of 12 - 18, very formative years. That place is a gun nut state, it is such a big trafficking state its ridiculous, trust me when I say that most of the illegal guns that are in the north come from VA. Getting a gun there is like going to buy condoms; everyone has them and its extremely ignorant. They need to work on their gun laws and all the Navy Trafficking that is occuring down there. A sensless tragedy is what occurred a V-Tech but one can’t put all the blame on rap music. I understand what you are saying RealTalk but I think it speaks to a separate topic in our black and urban community. These boys out here are at a loss for role models, even with those that have fathers in the homes; they consistently look toward the outlaw mentality that is glorified in many forms of media.

April 18th, 2007 at 8:13 am
I am pretty sure Jay-Z was definitly not talking about respecting a shooter like the one in V.A. If you would sit back and look at it,it seems like today people think its cool to be shot like that makes you tougher. I believe that was the point he was tryin to make. Don’t start rumors sayin’ it was a diss to that person or that person. And people need to stop lookin into music so much. Like its a guideline to life. There human just like us.

RESPECT:to show regard or consideration for: to respect someone’s rights
RESPECT:to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person’s privacy.
RESPECT:to relate or have reference to. a particular, detail, or point (usually prec. by in): to differ in some respect.
THESE YOUNG DUDES NEED TO READ MORE BEFORE THE TALK KNOWLEDGE THEY KNOW OF..ONE

“he was lazy with that whole album but thats a whole nother topic. Anyone still listening to Kingdom Come? I forgot about the lyrics til u mentioned them.”
BEFORE you sit at your computer and criticize someone… take a look at your own grammar.
April 18th, 2007 at 9:20 am
It doesn’t matter the exact definition of the word respect, it’s how it’s used and it’s intention when it comes to hip hop. Someone can say a completely morally wrong punchline, and they get a pass because it might be hot diss or make sense on another level.
Do you really think that line is nothing more then, “oh respect the shooter”.. if anything it’s taking away from these rapper punks that brag about getting shot like it gives them clout.
It’s music open to interpretation and perception is key, it’s not a concrete science.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:45 am
PLease Stop it. I shouldnt even pay these idiots any mind at all but I gotta atleast try and help the poor minded.
(if u dont get that…. get help fast!!!)
IM going to make it as clear as possible without going deep.
u CANT connect him with that killing spree.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:46 am
i dn’t understand how jay can say he respects ds shooter when he ain’t never shot no body or being shot.. were da respect oming from whn he doesent know the implications of being shot or shooting. Sum tings are mean’t for ryme effect not coz he thinks so… wat now, is he going to agree with that loner who had no morals and decided to buy a gun and shoot innocent students at V-Tech. get it right people, i respect da one that got shot because he/she survived…. Which is greater for you?
Surviving or shooting!!!!!!!!!!!
April 18th, 2007 at 10:49 am

Everybody respects the person who got shot nowadays. 50 cent is making money because he got shot 9 times. Lil wayne brags about being shot twice. 30 something is an OG song and it should be left like that. Everybody should listen to Jay’s verse on timbaland’s give it to me remix. OG status. Jay rocked the world 8 summers straight nobody should hate. Thats consistent hardwork.

I believe niggaz dont get shot for nothing.. Hov was just saying in his era The killer was respected of course because of fear but now a dayz niggaz who get shot walkin around like the should respected in the same way as a killer .. I say why respect the victim . they the ones that got caught slippin.. Iam not saying respecting a killer is righ or wrong its just is what it is fear is power..

Tougher gun laws for what? People doing all the killing don’t have no damn permits. Tougher gun laws take guns out the hands of people who use them for protection not illegal activities. I respect the shooter, not the shot. I feel ya Jay. Come up in my shit fuckin with me or mine? I am going to be the one with the respect.

to be honest i dont think jay z should have to appologize for what he said in his songs people neeed to stop blamming music for their bad ass kids and the parents need to start raising their kids better than they do if jay z were to jump of a cliff would you do it? i know i sure as hell wont you couldent pay me enough i just think its a lame ass excuse when some body does something so damn retarded they try to say music inspired them to do it. and thats bullshit you are your own person jay z never told you to do that and if he did you have to be grown enough to say no so stop with all that bull about music is the cause for the wrong thats going on just take a look in the mirrior (parents) and ask your self am i raising my kid right and spending enough time with them

JAY WAS TALKING ABOUT CAM TRYING TO RAT ON HIM, AND SAY THAT SOMEBODY FROM THE ROC SHOT HIM!!!!
April 20th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Those lyrics are wack and please quit trying to clear up his lyrics. The man said he respects the shooter. Which is whack. For the simple fact that cowards are usually behind the trigger. Do you respect the clown who just shot your daughter or mother? Jay is human. He is also capable of whack lyrics from time to time. This is 1 good example.

HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!! So who do you respect….the one who got shot. Nigga please, u a dumb ass for being mad at that line.

All these people who say ‘ parents should raise there kids better’ and what not need to wake up and smell the bacon. I used to say that alot and even though it may be a factor the fact still remains that people are influenced by what they hear in music. I know alot of people have fine parents but are still drawn into the hiphop influences. Your not going to look to your parents for inspiration on whats ‘cool’, your going to look to pop culture and if someone like jay-z says he respects the shooter thats gonna have an effect on alot of people, even those ‘adults’ within hiphop are influenced bysuch statements, hence uncle murdas mixtape title. Essentially if you keep hearing the same msg over and over your gonna start to think its true

If Jigga’s little verse is taken in the right context, it makes all the sense in the world. Those who have joined the “game” of their own free will should be governed by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Whether those rules are good or bad is neither here nor there. They are what they are. We need to remember that once you operate outside the law, you should not expect those same laws to intervene in your aid should you feel you were slighted, robbed etc.
However, I vehemently disagree with those who then try to apply the rules that govern the game to the rest of their community. That, IMHO, is killing us slowly as a society. People who rep the “Stop Snithcing” garbage outside of the game are a blight on our society that should be purged. They do not understand the damage they are responsible for. By “repping” such garbage, they ensure our children will continue to grow up in the most violent, drug infested neighborhoods. They ensure our children grow up to join the game because the romance and fairy tale nature of the game (i.e. the impunity, respect, money) are difficult to ignore if the game is viewed as a natural part of our society. They ensure law and order are deprived from our communities that are already struggling. It is the most disgusting, disrespectful, selfish “movement” I have ever seen. I hope it crashes and burns on its own accord in the near future when people realize how destructive it is. SAVE OUR CHILDREN!
