LeBron James & Stephon Marbury Sneaker Debate

kicks

Stephon Marbury and Lebron James have recently made some comments about  the sneakers they endorse.

Before the game, James took a little shot at Marbury’s $14.98 kicks, saying he couldn’t imagine endorsing a sneaker that cheap.”No, I don’t think so,” James said. “Me being with Nike, we hold our standards high.”

Stephon’s response- “I’d rather own than be owned.” Full Story

I respect Marbury for trying to make a change. Over the past few years, stars like Shaq and Hakeem Olujawon have tried to make NBA endorsed sneakers cheaper for people to buy. Unfortunately its very hard for these kind of sneakers to have success. People, no matter how poor they may be, want expensive clothes to be considered cool. So if you wear sneakers like these people will be quick to have jokes, even if they can’t pay rent.

As far as Lebron goes, I don’t think he really cares. I’m sure he does a lot of charity work, but I don’t think he cares about how much his sneakers are selling for, as long as Nike cuts him his check. It just the world we live in, they got ugly ass Jordans being sold for 175, and people still buy them. If your in high school, ok, waste your money while you can. But after high school, hopefully kids get smarter and have a better perspective on things. You don’t want people telling you, “Damn Homey, in high school you was the man homey, WTF happen to you?

In other news, Lebron James’ new house is in the works. Facts about the house:
cost 2.1 million
located in South Cleveland
35,440 square feet

The basketball star’s pad won’t be finished until the summer of 2008 — and no wonder. It will include a recording studio, a two-lane bowling alley, a casino, a 26-foot-by-63-foot theater, a sports bar, an aquarium and a barbershop.
Yes, a barbershop. Lower level. Near the front. Next to the bowling alley. A first-floor master suite, which includes a two-story walk-in closet, is about 40 feet wide and 56 feet long. Full Story

  2. curt angle Says:

and black people are the main ones to dis somebody if they are wearing inexpensive clothes but yet as a whole still really don’t have shit to show for in this world and real talk it is mainly us african americans yeah rascism is alive like a motherfucker and these schools are a joke but a lot of todays ill we have brought on ourseleves with the exception of the people of new orleans you people will show no emotion when watching when the levees broke but would get mad in a minute if somebody is looking at you a certain way

  3. whoa Says:

the shit kills me when basketball players come out wit shoes at payless and shit. for what? so that broke ass lil kids will buy your shoes? yeah they bought your shoes cuz they were 10 bucks, but they still want some jordans. i guess comin out wit some cheap ass shoes will make somebody feel better about themselves

  4. WOW Says:

Those Lebron’s are fuckin ugly as fuck i would buy them Starburry’s i want too and i will if i find them anyone got aproblem ill fuck ya girl wearing the starberrys they look 1000 times better then lebrons factory rejects

  5. Bigsmoker Says:

You can’t front on the marburys they are cheap but so are the nikes we all wear, they just UP THE HELL OUTTA THEY PRICES..remember jordans were being made in a sweatshop they only make pennies on the dollar and the materials are cheap. so whoa u can buy the lebrons and people will say u got on ugly kicks..only LB’s i got are the air force 1 with the cavs colorway…

  6. dscrila Says:

both of them shoes are ugly as hell, in fact lebron has not had any hot shoes so far. Only time a wear basketball shoes is to play ball or work out. If i had to choose i would definitely buy starburys before lebrons. By the way starburys shoes and gear sell pretty good according to steve & barry. If you go on Ebay cats are paying damn near double for the starburys. If you think about it Marbury is probally seeing good money and saving youth money. Win Win situation.

  7. Anon Says:

Who the fuck Lebron think he is selling his shits for 150? Since when were the “Lebrons” up to par with “Jordans.” Nigga just got in the game and he already want to sell his ugly ass kicks for 150 as if they’re collectables or something.

  8. j.rome Says:

what you all have to understand is that these athletes are nothing more than well paid slaves. think about it, they nevr say anything bad about whom ever is paying them. they get sold to any team that has the money to pay them. they don’t have any type of freedom in the nba. just some high paid slaves.

  9. Mike Says:

Yeah i have money to buy lebron’s, but who wants to buy something from someone who doesn’t care? Really how smart do you think lebron is when it comes to understanding the struggles that are going on within the US. I have 3 pairs of starbury’s that doesn’t make me any poorer or richer than anyone else. It makes me wise, if you realize it lebron’s sneakers probably only cost 30$ to make, but ignorant people insist they are worth the 150$ that they are posting up for. Smarten up!. Stop being controlled by material things and learn what’s going on in the world. IMF/WORLD BANK.

  10. BIGMALIK Says:

LISTEN AT THE END OF THE DAY GET YA PAPER! YOU CANT KNOCK LABRON FOR PIMPING THE SYSTEM THAT PIMPS US EVERYDAY, BUT WHAT STARBURY DID CHANGED THE GAME. I LIVE IN JERSEY CITY SO EVERYTIME I GO TO THE MALL STARBURY GEAR IS FLYING OFF THE RACK! AS FAR AS WHAT PEOPLE SAY BLACK PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR, THEY GONNA HATE ANYWAY! BIG UP TO STARBURY FOR CHANGING THE GAME, WITH A FEW MORE STARS THE BIG DOGS WILL BE FORCED TO LOWER PRICES!
    JERSEY STAND UP!

  11. whoa Says:

i hear u talkin bigsmoker, im a bigsmoker too, but forreal. do u think marbury came out wit some cheap ass shoes so that people could get some good hoop shoes for a good price, or do u think he came out wit some cheap ass shoes so that people would say “look, marbury came out wit some 10 dolla shoes! he’s so great! he’s giving back to the community!” u see what im sayin? this is different, but look. u remember when everybody was talkin about oprah givin away all those cars and shit? the only reason she did it is because that shit was a tax write-off. if the shit was comin out of her pocket she wouldn’t have did it. u dig? its too many times when people do shit just so that they can help their self image. but shoutout to my man starbury. he a killa on the court. no hate comin from this way

  12. JPo Says:

Lebron would have done better to keep his comments to himself.. its not a good look for him. I’d rock those Marburys for sure id also rock lebrons though still. Funny thing is i bet they cost the same to make… Nike is milking cats for all they got.

  13. JSTO Says:

Marbury has hot kicks and is a good guy for it. Who cares if it’s a tax write off or whatever. The man hasn’t forgotten where he came from like so many people do…..I can respect that.

  14. so fresh Says:

  17. mayadwight Says:

As a parent I am appauled. I love to watch Lebron play, and I dont really care for the Starbury’s but my son has 2 pairs and I told him he can go crazy in the store. For one of Lebron’s he can get 8 of Starbury’s and it’s fine by me, this comment was ignorant however you have to look at Lebron’s age he is still a baby and dont know any better.

  18. drknoc3 Says:

all you people know you want a pair of marburys..i bought me 3 pairs and i feel great…i also have 3 pairs of jordans but i feel great knowing i got a bargain for the marburys..lebron’s kicks look like it came out of his ass..aleast marbury is loking out for the kids and the parents..who is lebron looking out for his pocket??like some one said before marbury is changing the game..and all those over priced sneakers need to become reasonable so everyone can be happy..and if u prefer to pay more than less than u need yah head checked out..

  19. chad Says:

I dont know why everybody wnats to down starburys they look good and there cheap you can call me a broke ass white boy for wearing them if you want but when it comes down to it all you people buyin jordans and lookin good in the hood are selling drugs and shit to kids and fuckin peoples lifes up so you can get your shoes i work my job and dont do any stupied shit so there for marbury is makein it easy for use under payed stright up people to look good. when you lose your drug dealin and you aint got no money you will be at steve and berrys in line behide me with 3 pair of starburys sayin shit them some bad ass shoes for 15 dollers

  20. sam Says:

starburys are amazing i have a pair and i love them they are just as good as lebrons but cheaper why wouldnt you want them

  21. Blak.Ops.Connections Says:

ok here are the simple facts. A shoe is a shoe and that is it. It really boils down to who is wearing the shoe and with what outfit. I know this because i was rocking a green outfit with some green kicks and throughout the whole day males and females complimented the shoes continually how much where did you get them?? And what were the shoes…. of course the shoes were Starburys size thirteen clean of course. Take a look at these glorified Nikes and notice that they resembled Starburys inside and out. The Nikes cost $150 and up?? And both shoes are manufactured from the same place with the same basic material?? Only idiots follow broke trends. Wise up and take control of your our fashion, mind, and money.

    Blak.Ops

  22. JJ Says:

yo forget all y’all lebron is the best player and he has the best sneaker their hot and look wat do y’all think last longer lebrons or those ugly starburys

ps i would really buy starburys only somebody robbed me of my lebrons and left me wit only $15

  23. spazza Says:

the starburys are so sweet my dad was like dont get the shoes there 15$ there cheep and he wanted me to buy some LJS and i was like hell no the starburys r so much nicer they beet LJS any day and i bot him a par 4 chritmas and he like them so much that now all of mine and his shoe are starburys.

  24. deep Says:

I got my elf a pair of jordans but yeah i agree i think kids pay to much money for shoes expecialy highschool kids like me i got a buddy the only clothes or shoes this dude buys are over $100 hes got nothing saved for collage or university and in my opinoin if they sold maurburys up north in canda i would probably own a pair cause there nice shoes man its just they are harder to find in stores

  25. THINK Says:

Back in the early 70s, I remember when I bought my first pair of white high-top Converse (Chuck Taylor) sneakers for $10.00! I damn near cried I was so excited. And ten bucks for a pair of sneakers was a lot of money! And these sneakers were made from canvas material. Man, you wore those sneakers until there were holes in the bottom. I remember when I arrived home. I placed the sneakers on my bed and just starred at them. I had arrived!

In the late 80s and 90s young people were bring robbed for Jordans and other Nike sneakers. I remember assisting a young guy who had his sneakers taken right off his feet in Brooklyn. He was left standing barefoot and crying on the sidewalk!

During the same period, FootLocker and other stores in New York would place the next generation of Air Jordans on sale and people would camp put overnight in order to get a pair at $150.00. These sneakers were part of the urban fashion statement, particularly among young folks of color.

It is great to see Marbury develop a sneaker that is less expensive–though these sneakers are made in sweatshops overseas–Lebron, Kobe, Jordan, you name it. That’s the name of the game: merchandising and as long as Lebron gets his money, he could care less. That’s the nature of the beast, baby, plain and simple.

  26. Abe Says:

sneakers are sneakers no matter how much they cost but with more money come a better product and starburys are horrible sneaker i twisted my ankle in them smh

  27. loop' Says:

i support starbury’s over lebron’s no matter what!
i kinda boycott any nike bball shoes.. FUCK CAPITALISM!
