BK Rapper On The Grind
by Nigel D.

RTNY:Whats going on with you career currently?

LG: Just dropped the third cd, Industry-Cosign 3(review), it’s crazy right now, just promoting the hell out of that sh!t. And you know, still recording, doing shows, getting that industry buzz. Cats are paying attention now, so I’m trying to make it happen.

RTNY:So how you got started in the rap game?

LG: Just rhyming since I was a little shorty, hooking up with my dude, my management team. They loved the music, they feel passionate about the project and about me and my music. So they kept an eye on me and from there, just letting people hear the music and being able to play it for the producers and rappers and sh!t like that. Cats took a liking to me, and from there its been on and popping.

RTNY: I know you from Brooklyn, did that influence your rap style?

LG: No doubt, no doubt, when I got into it, into it, was during the Boot Camp era, nah mean, Buck Shot, Smooth Da Hustler, Jay & Biggie. Just from hearing that alone, I came up being able to battle a nigga in a minute, and being able to spit a hot 16 or create a good record. I grew up around that shit. It kind of makes me cut from a different cloth, compared to the rest of the little dudes trying to come out.

RTNY: So you got the NY swagger?

LG: Yes sir, yes sir, all day, you already know.

RTNY: How you feel about the South coming up and doing their thing as of late?

LG: Its all good, I got family from the South you nah mean, so I feel there whole movement regardless. I think there getting a lot of slack now because NY niggas not really making good records. Niggas are spitting all day on there DVDs and mixtapes but not making good records. Its not bringing anything back to the east. Hopefully all that is about to change soon, but I definitely got love for dudes out there. I got Paul Wall on one of my records now, David Banner produced it and DJ Drama hosted the mixtape. So I definitely got love from the South, the gonna hold me down.

RTNY: What do you think about the lack of unity in NY right now?

LG: Its wack sh!t,  pretty much that’s how we know how to promote our music, by being on some crab in a bucket  sh!t, unfortunately. But that’s how NY sh!t it, that’s how it always been, trying to get at this person to get at that person. It is, what is is, I think there should be more unity, that’s why the South is winning. T.I., or whoever, can do a show in ATL and everybody gonna rep for that nigga. Out here here is totally different, everybody got there little crew or sets and that’s who they fuck with. They will step on your toes to get past you in a minute. I’m trying to change that up a little bit. I got a record I just did with Jae Millz and Stimuli, two NYC cats. I’m actually about to put out a mixtape with Stimuli, on some NY sh!t. Previously before that I had record with me, Graph, Saigon, Scram Jones & Curtains(When Animals Attack), really trying to bring back that spitting sh!t and get the real east coast vibe. I’m only one man, I can only make it happen but so much.

RTNY: How do you feel about the Hip Hop game right now? Does it need a change? Can you bring the change to it?

LG: I definitely think it needs a change. That’s the only ways it going to stay alive, it has to keep evolving. I got no problem with whats going on now, I just don’t think there is enough balance in Hip Hop. You put on the radio and hear 20 straight minutes of Southern artists in my hometown, it should be a southern artist, a west coast artsist and an east coast artist. So everybody should be getting there shot, I don’t want to hear crunk all say, or rough east coast music all day, it should be balanced. Good music, is good music and that’s what we need at the end of the day. I bring the Hip Hop soul aspect to it, a lot of cats ain’ t making records, they just spitting the song. I’ll spit, and I can that hit records, I got a few good ones. At the same time I got records that are full of content. I don’t rap just to rap, or do a song just to do a song. I like to make records that will be around for a long time.

RTNY: What are your thoughts on the DJ Drama situation?

LG: It doesn’t surprise me, that nigga is getting his shine, shout out to DJ Drama all day. He’s home now so he’s good. Haters are gonna try to get to us anyway they can, they will fuck with a cat selling mixtapes, than a cat selling cigarettes or some sh!t that can kill you. Not to be political or on no bullsh!t, but its real talk. They after a cat that’s not selling or robbing, and just putting out music from his friends and people he know. We giving him our music to promote us, there shouldn’t be any b.s. that’s how the government works, if it ain’ t them its the cops, you already know.

RTNY: So What are your plans for 2007?

LG: I’m trying to get this deal, been having some real good meetings lately. they loving the music, they love the movement and its a lot of love and support I’m getting. So I’m just trying to lay down the track work and make sure I do everything possible to get that deal, and get my music heard by the world. Hopefully next time we do an interview I will be in a different situation.

RTNY: To wrap things up, how would you describe yourself to people that have never heard your work?

LG: Well I feel Hip Hop soul is missing from Hip Hop right now. Everybody on some tough guy sh!t. The average rap fan doesn’t make more that 50, 60k a year. So you have all these artist rich as hell, and they only rap about sh!t they got and can obtain. We can’t relate to them, its kind of weird. I speak for the people that can’t rhyme. You got your opinions about DJ Drama and whats going on in the streets, I’m the cat that speaks for you if you can’t rhyme. So we really trying to bring that Hip Hop soul. Not trying to make it seem like we on some Common or Talib Kweli tip. In a way, I am, I respect them but I’m definitely on some borderline sh!t. I can make a hit record that makes you dance in the club and as soon as you hit the crib you can throw me on and I will have you thinking. So Hip Hop soul all day, real, real, authentic music.
