I don;t see how saying why don't you go back to Africa as a comment I should not delete. You really think its that easy to move back to africa after being displaced for centuries??? Do you feel black people should go back to Africa eventhough they helped build it?

People who are ignorant are ignorant, not because of their color while yes nobody can tell Black people to just get over it, sometimes maybe it is taken a bit too far..frankly I just ain't wanna see my grandchildren blaming the white people's grandchildren for all the wrongs in the world, when those of that generation really have no fault in what happened...they were only born of a certain color...

Hopefully we can break the vicious circle

One of my history teachers in high school(a white man) called black history month defacto segregation......saying that "blacks were segregating ourselves by having our own month for history".........
White people always have lopsided views on things regarding the minorities of this country, the author of this article is ignorant for making such a blind assessment as this and I agree with everything you said realtalk.
Black history in no way shape or form inhibits the equality of other races or ethnicities, but instead acknowledges the milestones that many Black/African Americans have achieved......something that history classes in American public schools do not do. This article is ignorance at its best........

I am definitely feeling what Real Talk is sayin. In regards to what calm down said, after the holocust the Jews were deperate to go any where. Yes they were forced out of their native lands, but no one grabbed them and threw them into america and work a few more hundred years for free. Any way, I go to a predominately white university and Black history month on campus is not "advertised" of focused on. I have a lot of white friends I'm not hearing them scream down the hall saying "happy Black History Month." Conclusion unless we are talking about rap or whatever asect of balck culture that is mainstream, the rest of america is not going to pay attention. Amd hell, the hispanics have october for a history month and I saw more commercials and publicity for that then for balck history month. And why do hispanics get one of the longest moths for their history month than blacks do?

She can't really understand why we have and why we appreciated Black History Month because she's seein everything in a white perspective. If she was to see how it is and how it was to be African American, she most definately woulda thought twice before she did this article. I think overall the article she did was hella ignorant and she needs to do more research.

As someone who went through the public school system in a middle class neighborhood, I didn't learn anything about my history that I didn't already know. All they teach you in school is that we came off a boat, couldn't vote, got chased by dogs and water hoses and then after MLK Jr made his speech, everything was peachy-keen and there was equality. The only four people we learned about were MLK, X, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman when I KNOW that there are many more significant African Americans in my history. Give me a month to expand people's minds about my culture. I rather have a month, than a chapter in a textbook. I rather have a month then one video during class about the same thing. I rather have a month than a commercial.

What bothers me the most is that we as a culture sometimes use Black History Month as the only time we learn about the people of our culture, which to me is ridiculous. You should be aware of who you came from and the advances we have made. Pick up a book, watch a movie other than Roots, visit a museum...but do it outside of February. The ignorance that surrounds our younger generation today stems from the ignorance of their past. If they knew that our ancestors were Kings and Queens, scientists, teachers, innovators, leaders, ground-breakers...these kids could hold their heads high and I say that they are somebody. Instead they only learn the only aspect that they are taught, that they were worthless individuals who because of Lincoln, became free.

Our history is distorted and it takes us to change that.
