Sunday Discussion: Is BET Bringing Black People Down???
I have heard from a lot of people that BET has no quality programming and only promotes stereotypes. Having a show called, “American Gangsters,” which shows the lives of major criminals doesn’t help. While the show does show crime doesn’t pay, they still glorify the lifestyle these people lived and I am sure it encourages criminals to excel at their craft. They use to have BET uncut, which was pure trash. It was entertainment for those to young, broke or lazy too go to a strip club. With all that said, I felt people were overreacting and they were no worse then the garbage on MTV. But it seems they have reached a new low, they are now asking people to send in their videos of, “Hot Ghetto Mess.”
I really think a television station can come up with something better to show then, “Hot Ghetto Mess.” What will be shown on this show? Well searching online I found this, not absolutely sure the person is from the show, but it sure sounds like it.
I’m a producer for a new comedy television show airing on the BET network, “Hot Ghetto Mess.” The show is all about wild, sensational, and outrageous clips and culture in the black community with an angle on humor. We are currently licensing original footage and I am seeking footage of black lowriders and their vehicles. The more bling and crazy the better. I am also looking for the super ghetto stuff, like a dude with $10,000 spinners on a Yugo, & funny stuff: cars getting thrashed, super ghetto car girls, crashes, mishaps, etc all about black culture…
This fool has the nerve to say, “all about black culture,” so I guess he thinks the ghetto=black culture. Seems like BET wants to make a fool out of blacks in hopes of high ratings. If CBS had this show people would of called them racist, but having BET airing it is even worse. How about BET show something positive and informative, there are enough kids watching scandalous things in music videos. Its a shame that Blacks have limited outlets on TV, and this is how they choose to utilize it. To the people at BET, wake up, Black people do need to see, “Hot Ghetto Mess,” how about more education and less tacky entertainment.

BET is owned by the white man. The creator is a sellout who lost half his fortune of 3bill to his ex-wife.
Im half and half on this one..BET needs more “positive” programming but BET’s audiences wouldn’t watch it. If people still waiting for BET to do a 180 and change their ways well you’re in the lost…watch TVOne
you know what this is a helpless sitiuation Bet is owned by the same people that own mtv and these white people are the most prejudice people of all time and i know this for a fact beacause i have worked on several shows for mtv and bet and the climate these people build around the workplace is unbelieveable if you question anything that you may see as inapporiate you canget firde on the spot if you are a person of color death to all these scumbags and that includes the blacks also who let this take place
I personally think that this question should even be up for discussion, because the answer is obvious. I would just love to meet someone who, after taking a hard look at BET’s programs, would try to convince me that BET is not bringing people down. Maybe for folks at BET they may feel that their intentions are well (what those intentions are I don’t know). Regardless of what those intentions are, I don’t think the ends justify the means.

Dam man BET stay makin the black community look like shit… 1st they glorifying american gangsters n even if they tryna show what happens when u take the short route they know that hustlers, ex hustlers, fake hustlers, or even future hustlers will be influenced by the negative aspects of the show rather then the consequences because that’s just the society we live in today…. n now another stero type ass show
BET use to have quality programming. From Teen Summit, BET News, and The Tavis Smiley show. Now they constantly play the same 10 videos mixed into all their video shows. Show old re-runs of minstrel like comedy shows that came out in the 90s. Is now run by white people and we sit by and let them still carry the name BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION. If you’re black and support this network which supposedly represents you, I really feel sorry for you as a person and your integrity as an African-American. When I was 20, I had a college professor tell the class that he didn’t like BET. I didn’t understand then(7 years ago), but today I understand perfectly what he was saying. Age=Wisdom.
Once B.E.T. got rid of Tavis Smiley and the nightly news with what’s her name with the nice physique, it was a wrap. Then last year or the year before they couldn’t play De La, Beatnuts or Little Brother for some silly reason like “Our audience doesn’t identify with your music.”
I haven’t watched B.E.T. consistently since the mid-90s with Joe Claire, and when I turn to it recently for Rap City, they have the same videos. So they have done nothing to entice me personally, but then again, I’m white and not officially their audience. - Matt
I REALLY hope this is not true. Because College Hill was bad enough, American Gangsters idolizes losers, and all the other shows arent much better….
I say burn it down. BET is to blame for a lot of the nonsense that goes on in the Black community. Kids that watch it internalize it and live this mess out. If they promoted only positive programming geared towards teens, I think they would watch it.
It is bad enough that VH1 continues to put out all that bullshit that they call black entertainment. Flavor of Love 1+2 and now I love New York all help to pull us down as people with their ignorant antics. And now add BET to the list. I have been very saddend by BET for the past 3 years. Their progamming has gone hell and do not do anything to uplift us. As a mid-20’s black man in corporate america, shows like these make it harder and harder for people like me to be taken seriously. We bette start paying attention soon because we are falling lower and lower on the totem poll in this country. We have the lowest average household income in the country and by a pretty lagre magin. let’s wake up folks!
HELLO!! black ENTERTAINMENT. whether you like it or not, this is what a wide range of black people find entertaining. Besides, what the hell kind of ratings would BET have if it was “educational”. Kids see WAYYY worse than what’s on BET, so if you really think that’s affecting them you’re way off. And the american gangster thing. No, they’re not glamourising it. They’re telling the truth. That’s what actually happened in those situations. It’s not their fault that drugs/violence=money.
Well, I just watch it for the videos sometimes, but even those disgust me sometimes. I’ve stop watching BET after I out grew 106 and Park.
BET called me asking for footage for this show. I told them no for the exact same reason. Seems they dont have any creative minds over there to produce quality programming.
The last thing we need is yet another show that perpetuates negative images of blacks in mainstream media
I strongly urge you to sign the petition to stop this show from even getting started and make sure to forward this to as many people as possible:

This is just more bullshit our grafted “brothaz” are feedin our babies!! As an adult you have the opportunity to pick and choose the images, music, clothing etc. that you want! You want to see naked woman, listen to “gangsta” rap, watch porn whatever, you’re an adult! Our kids unfortunatly don’t have that luxury most of the time. They listen to and watch what they are able to most easily access. For many it is MTV and BET and the rest of the corporate pimps!! The bottom line is that BET is owned by Viacom, headed by Sumner Redstone, a White man who is continuing the legacy set forth by his ancestors during the 1800s when minstrel shows were popular in the United States and England. We need to understand the history of our people in order to combat these stereotypes of Black people. Even before Robert Johnson sold BET, the station lost its credibility by firing Tavis Smiley, Donnie Simpson, Sherry Carter, Ed Gordon, Bev Smith, and other Black people who aimed to show diversity in our culture. We need to stop watching the shows which denigrate us as a people and the stations will pay attention, but see, the corporations know that we are among the biggest consumers in the country so we are being taken advantage of and we allow it. I feel like this: once we begin to take Black children and adults to libraries and bookstores much more, then BET and other stations which get rich by exploiting us as racial, cultural, and sexual stereotypes will not get our attention. We need to support Cathy Hughes on TV One.
This is a damn shame! They’ve gone too far! To hell with BET! The ‘B’ in BET is for BUFOONERY!
This is sorry and sad. I wont be supporting it
Real Talk:
A show called “American Black Kings” would hardly be watched and or supported for very long.
Imagine how long a series called “Ashy To Classy - Positive Ghetto Stories” would last? 1, 2 seasons?
Even if these shows were developed, they would come on Sunday Morning before 12pm, or after 2am - when not many people are up.
Its sad, but its a truth.
Drama Sells. Contraversy Sells.
Its 2007 peeps. BET is certainly not in the business of educating ever since Viacom took control to a degree.
BET does not owe us anything.
We here complaining are not their target audience.
Were sit here, year after year after year talking about a network who cares nothing about our demographics. Its pointless.
The best way to boycott, (and this is just my opinion) is to tune it out, dont support or watch it.
For those with children - block the channel, including web acsess to BET on your computers.
The silent majority will always win.
They are not on message boards or forums complaining like us.
The silent majority are the people who are watching BET right now.

I THINK THIS MATTER NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF BLACK ACTIVIST LIKE DR.CORNEL WEST,PAUL MOONEY,AL SHARPTON,MINISTER FARRAKAHN,MICHEAL ERIC DYSON,TAVIS SMILEY JUST TO NAME A FEW..IT NEEDS ATTENTION LIKE THE MICHEAL RICHARDS SITUATION..BET NEEDS BOYCOTTING LIKE THE WHITEFOLKS DID TIME-WARNER, BUT COULD IT HAPPEN?..ONE WONDERS..SOMEONE GOT A MILLION BLACK MEN TO GO TO WASHINGTON.
Peace ya’ll,
I just felt like I had to comment on this, because a lot of these comments are coming from (no offense intended at all!) people looking from the outside in.
I work for BET, and have so for the past year and a half. I’m actually the voice in the spot that is advertising the up coming show, “Hot Ghetto Mess”.
BET has given me an opportunity that no one has given me. And as a young, aspiring black man in the business of music, that goes a very long way. Being here has changed my life. Not to mention the wealth of black talent that works hard here everyday. But I know it doesn’t stop there. Our people in the area of broadcast and entertainment have a very long way to go, still. No, I didn’t sell my soul to be here. All that to say is, there isn’t a legion of demons working here to destroy black people!
Has anyone been to the actual site, http://www.HotGhettoMess.com, the site that inspired the show? If not, you need to go, scroll to the bottom of the page, and read what this man is saying. I’m not saying to agree or disagree. I don’t even know what direction the actual show is going in. I just think we need to redirect out energy in more creative ways, and investigate before lashing with comments about things we don’t really know about.
I read about people complaining about “American Gangster” as if it was gloifying gangster activity. If that’s what someone thinks, then they definately didn’t see the show! That show was definately a step above anything BET has ever done, straight up.
Trust me, I don’t agree with everything that’s done at BET as far as programming is concerned. But that’s the same I feel with MANY of the channels, period. BET named Louis Farrakahn “Man of the Year” last year, publicly. No one was hootin’ and hollerin’ about that online.
To summerize: no, I don’t agree with everything that goes on with Viacom or it’s channels, or other media companies like Fox, etc. Yes, BET is creating opportunity for up and coming black talent that gets NO love elsewhere. Yes, we collectively have a ways to go, and shouldn’t be allowed to humiliate ourselves in any way, anywhere. Regardless of opinion, let’s keep the lines of communication going and continue to let our voices be heard.

I stoped watching BET in 2001 because of their ignorant programs and their degrating of blacks in this country. We do not need shows like American gangsta or Hot ghetto mess. Not all black people live in the ghetto and not all black people are criminals. My reasons to stop watching BET were because they showed all programs that degrade like the booty videos. We need positive shows now more than ever. Just look at our community, look at our schools, look at our kids. A lot of people like to say that the white man is keeping us down but he doesn’t have to do that anymore because we are doing it to ourselves. If these shows were on ABC or CBS more people would be up in arms about it but BET is allowed to get away with it? I stoped watching BET in 2001 and i will not watch it ever again.
My poor Mr. Banger. You cry opportunity? Opportunity to shed light on “ghetto mess” the entire world already knows what goes on in ghettos, bringing more light to it does not stop it. Instead, shining more light on positive things is what’s needed. Ghetto mentalities are like temper tamtrums in children, if you give in to them every time you try and take something away from them, they will simply throw another tamtrum until you give in again. Two things work with temper tantrums the occassional authoritative ass whuppin or ignoring them all together. The ghetto has been given the media coverage it so desperately desires, now its time to whup some ass or simply ignore it and replace the coverage with more positive influences. The reason why folk didn’t yell to high heaven when Farrakhan was elected was because, there were more note worthy folk in the community that may have deserved it and because those of us with half a brain do not watch BET because of its degenerative state. So what BET throws a dog a bone every now and again. We are tired of eating bones, and want the whole damn steak! Stop putting this mess in the media. If we were viewed as equals in main stream america then I’d say its okay to laugh at some situations, but because we are under a microscope we must be very careful as to the boofunery we display. This is a warfare of the subconscious mind and not the conscious. How much more do we want to feed there psyche of all we are good for is chicken, 40’s, bling, and ass giggling.
I stopped watching bet years ago,bet is not BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TV it is BLACK EFFORTS TWISTED.you said that our people were looking from the out side in,well sir have you ever lived in the ghetto,do you now? if not to theses questions, then try it,then you will know first hand what a hot ghetto mess is,so if you hav nottried it or lived it then seems like you are the one looking from the out side in.Ghettoism is not creativity, it is negativity,it is stereo typed,it says that we can do no better and live no better as a people, and that is true for those who are prisoners there trying to make it out, whats so glamorous about steel bars, elavators that dont work, urine filled hall ways, garbage strewn parking lots and play grounds, whats so bling bling about a single mother thats trying to feed her kids, or a mother that keeps loosing her sons to gang infested corners, how about a program called living in main stream suburbia, where the lawns are chemicaly treated, where there is a black working couple that goes to work everyday to make ends meet, punching a time clock. or a Black brother that wants to make it to wall street, or a single mother that has started her own business with just pennies because she wanted a better life for her children, now this sir is FABULOUS.We as a nation of blacks have struggled enough, getting pulled over just because or beign disrespected because we look like we dont have anything, goody for you that BLACK EFFORTS TWISTED has given you the break that you needed, eat the scraps that they have tossed you, because they are not bold enough to do so get a darkie
that way the heats on him, the BLIND LEADING THE BLIND!
take of your blinders and see the real light, feeding your people to the wolves should not be a part of your resume.
Do not let a hot ghetto mess be a spring board for your 60 minutes of fame.It will not boost rateings, and it will surly not get you hand shakes and pats on the back. You wont win a grammy and it will never make it to the big screen. it will be come a show that will air on me tv, where opie
and ovalteen commercial aires,It may fatten your wallet but it will no enlarge your heart. I have no respect for bet or it;s members or it’s programs, it is a degradeing channle
and a blurred sitcom,I say throw it out with the rest of the trash.Old stale food, brain dead minds, make good lunch partners, HAVE A GOOD MEAL.
Hi there,
I’m Jam Donaldson, creator of the website hotghettomess.com. I am aware that
you have started an on-line petition to stop production of BET’s show Hot
Ghetto Mess. Im not sure if you have seen the website but the site is a
denigration of our obsession of all that is ghetto and a critique of the
negative images that often we, ourselves, perpetuate. I strongly encourage you
to visit the website and, in particular, read the Note From the editor which
explains the site’s philosophy and purpose.
The BET show which I am co-executive producer on will have the same message and
overarching theme. The site’s slogan is “we got to do beter”…and the show
has been created as social commentary to reinforce this, because Lord knows we
do.
I just encourage you to find out more about the project before making such
sweeping statements and circulating inaccuracies. This is not a celebration of
hot ghetto mess, its a denigration of it. The show is a shame-on-you to all
those who are not representing our communities in a positive light.
I don’t know who the producer is that made the above comments.
If you have further questions and want to find out real live facts about the
show, feel free to email me at jam@hotghettomess.com.

Oh, and BTW Mr. Banger, I’m a female.
The dialogue on this page is interesting if not ignorant of the fact that the hotghettomess.com site from which the show is derived, is dedicated to the examination of things called ghetto and why black people persist in self-exploitation. Its asks us (and them) to focus in on the things that are WRONG with black American culture and change them.
In all honesty its not wrong for the website or the show to highlight the things that some black people are doing _to themselves_ and say “hey, this is a stone cold mess. We have got to do better.”
In fact the tagline of the site is “We have got to do better.” Neither the site nor the show are making people put 24 inch rims on a 74 cadillac and paint the outside lime green and the interior bright yellow (which I saw this past weekend at the Superbowl) and call it “hot.”
Neither media is making pregnant 16 year old girls, who obviously lack adult supervision, dress up in sequined prom dresses with a belly cut out and take pictures of themselves and put it on their myspace, facebook, or high school webpages (the public domain)… these are things folks are doing to themselves openly and without regard as to how they are making themselves look.
The HotGhettoMess.com effort is an introspective look at the not-so-normal things we do but accept in our community and asks us not to accept it anymore. The visual candor it provides is so that those who dont know or believe that these random acts of ignorance are taking place, at all levels within our community, can see for themselves whats going on. And hopefully by exposing it we will nudge our cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons and say “hey, you look a pure mess… clean it up.”
Most of us with fancy computers, and hoity-toity “educated” positions on what BET is “doing” to black people through their programming have, probably: a) participated in some buffoonery in their youth like Freaknic, Jones Beach, and even Kentucky Derby or the NBA All star game, or b) still attend such things but call them “vacations” or “events”.
Most us with sense come away from that time period with perspective and changed our behavior. But there is a great cadre of individuals who honestly believe that what you fine people think is ghetto or exploitation, is NORMAL and “real”.
Justice Louis Brandeis said “Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman.”
I would hope that my educated and respectable colleagues on this site and others would actually support Justice Brandeis’ position and see the airing of the HotGhettoMess show as that “electric light.” In fact, luminaries such as Michael Eric Dyson and Henry Louis Gates have been consulted on the site years ago and made suggestions as to how to make sure that it doesnt stray into the realm of exploitation. With their consultation, the site infact began years ago to include and highlight the “not ghetto mess” which brings a balance to its mission… but I digress…
I hope the site and now the show will continue to act as a diagnosis writ large for everyone to see - especially those who think their lifestyle is fine. I hope that through the airing and publicity of the hotghettomess site and show it will be an effective remedy for the “social disease” of glorified ghetto behavior that those of us pontificating on sites like this have done little or nothing ourselves to combat.
To anyone who thinks that there were or are good intentions behind the “Hot Ghetto Mess” website or telelvision show, my reply is, “The road to Hell is (sometimes) paved with good intentions.”
What people need to realize and understand is that the intentions of the “Hot Ghetto Mess” phenomenon are no longer relevant. It doesn’t matter what the show or the site was trying to do, it only matters what it is PERCEIVED to be doing. And what it will be PERCEIVED to be doing in the future.
Right now, it is perceived as a convenient, easily accessible, graphically enhanced way of ridiculing Afrikan Americans. I’ve never been to the site, so I don’t know if there are forums of discussion about ignorance in urban or impoverished communities or anything else. But it doesn’t matter, because when people email their friends with pictures from the website, they don’t link anything with the pictures. They only link the picutres. Or the videos. The recipient of that email, seeing that the pics or vids came from the “Hot Ghetto Mess” website, is left to think that the function of the website is to gather and distribute these images for people to laugh at and/or ridicule.
So. If the intent of the website was anything positive, then the website has failed in that intention. Does anyone think that the television show will do any better?
In response to Baba:
The fact that you will engage in this dialogue (in a mocking and negative way) and WILLINGLY not visit the site to answer your own questions is telling…
Have you seen Watermelon Man by Melvin Van Peebles? or read Nigger by Dick Gregory?
People’s perceptions of what those works may entail may be thoroughly and resoundingly trumped upon opening their eyes and their minds to what actually lays in the work.
The fact that you also use “Afrikan” American in your discussion maybe perceived as you being a contrarian simply for the sake of controversy. If your intent was positive you may have failed.
Please visit the site in order to determine in an educated way, whether or not the site and the intent is demonstrably positive or not.
I think it’s pointless to continuously hold BET to a standard that it refuses to live up to. As an audience, we have choices. Not only are there other programs to watch, but there’s other things we can do to get that mental stimulation. I stopped looking for something “educational” on BET ages ago. It’s just cable TV.
We have the internet, we have libraries and places to go to learn about our culture. Anyone that can afford a cable bill can afford the alternatives. And how many of us have really unified long enough to aggressively call BET to task, rather than using its shortcomings as blog fodder? Clearly not enough, since the mindless programming continues.
We must be responsible for our own development and stop making excuses.
If you think BET is trife and irresponsible, pick up a book. Sometimes it’s that simple.
I don’t know what you people are getting worked up about. The site is funny and the ad above is descriptive of what the show is looking for from browsing at the site. You people need to get out more. Come on now, lighten up…
I just wonder what it will take for us to wake up Hurricane Katrina, getting shot 52 times for no reason, your grandmother being mistaken as a drug dealer, what is it really going to take they make fun of us on daily and we sit back and laugh with them its a damn shame.
TV is stupid. Just turn it off. TV makes white people look dumb and ignorant too. What passes for entertainment and comedy is insulting to homo sapiens everywhere. Yes BET sucks, but let’s look at the bigger picture. I don’t believe any of what’s on the major networks is defensible. Vote with your eyeballs and your public TV donations. It won’t help to make TV politically correct. We need to make it intelligent instead.
I totally disagree that American Gangster glorified anything. If anything, it showed how the gov’t set up the black community to be its guinea pigs in the drug trade, the set them up to take the fall & make millions off the incarcerated. Whomever made the comment about American Gangster obviously did not see it until the end. It ties in perfectly to a show called “Bastards of the Party.” I cannot comment on the comedy show this email referred to. Watching documentaries like these help older folks understand black rage.
why is it BET`S job to raise your children? why is it viacoms job to teach you and your about black culture? it is and will always be YOUR job as a parent, black adult and human being to raise and mentor your children! all the comments i hear about how terrible “flavor of love” and “i love new york” are to black culture? when are you as black ppl going to say where are they getting all these black ppl to bufoon fo us to watch on tv? newsflash they are your brothers and sisters and neighbors, etc… the problem is not just the creators of the bufoonery but the bufoons themselves. i heard one woman say on turnoffchannel1 that “this is what they want you to believe the black woman of america are, on flavor of love” correct me if im wrong, but every single black woman who was cast to “play” her part in that show was a black woman, right? the problem is the black community and their lust for money.
We all are coming to realize more and more everyday that Black people have been under elevated attack VIA THE MEDIA MASSIVELY for the past 15 years.
Yes, I realize we have been oppressed our entire time here in captivity but what has happened to our state of mind or content of character since the complete saturation of Black superstars of the 1980’s, such as Michael Jackson, Magic Johnson, Oprah Winfrey (who has to have a 99 percent White staff to protect her), The Cosby Show, etc. their complete jealousy and annoyance with being wrong about our inferiority has rubbed them so much the wrong way, that a plan was developed to destroy our minds, therefore tearing down our family foundation leading to all the social ills that we are suffering today.
I’ve been noticing a very popular mentality among us Black people that we support the exception to the rule as if the majority doesn’t rule.
For example, I’ve read comments about the documentary series, American Gangster, that I watched and thought was the best thing I’ve ever seen on BET, ba-ut that was a series of one hour shows for a total of 6 weeks, I beleive, therefore to use American Gangster as a representation of BET positivity is very misleading. BET is one 24/7, which in a 6 week period, there are over 1000 hours of programming to which American Gangster only represented 6 hours. Sorry, one good apple doesn’t make the rest of them NOT rot. The one good apple rots with the rest of the spoiled ones.
Yes, we need to turn off BET. I turned it off years ago, now is the time to ban them completely. When they lose enough money, they will be forced to sell it back to one of us or do better by us. Voting with our dollars is the ONLY real vote that counts!
The trick bag that once told us to pay for our own demise is busted wide open and we simply ain’t taking it no mo’.
Please check out my new website: http://www.BlackMediaReview.com I have gotten the support of some heavy weight Black celebrities.
Much love and order your book, Black Women Need Love, too on amazon.com because activist have to eat too!

I believe that some comments on this page are wrong others have a point that they would like to make and it is that bet as corperation uot to make money is not bettering black and is not helping young men to better themselves. Tjhey see the things on bet and thats all they talk about. Mainly about how they want money so that they can buy and do the things that they see. Having another show that in many ways show the same thing is not good for the children and teenagers (cause as you all kow they are the main ones watching bet at home) is not good for their mantality.

Due to recent knowledge that a website that exist called “Hot Ghetto Mess” is being turned into a television production a group of us decided that we wanted to stop this show from ever hitting the air waves. The website shows negative images of people in the black communities. The creator of the site intends to shame and humiliate people to inspire them to “Do Better” but offers no solution. Many of us were appalled at the blatant exploitation of unsuspecting people who are merely living their lives the best way they know how. We do not agree with the creator of this sites approach to evoke positive change. We feel that this will do more harm than good.
There is a petition in circulation and letters have been written to the ACLU, BET and the Anti Defamation League. Being aware that in the entertainment industry negative publicity can often times be beneficial to the production of a show, we decided that we do not want to give this production anymore publicity than we already have by fighting against it. We want to offer solutions. There are so many other organizations in our communities that would better benefit from publicity.
We see our communities suffering everyday with a new breed of youth that accept that they are victims of circumstance. We want to make a difference, We want to help create a generation of people who recognize their power and take accountability for their own lives.
if you would like to read more of what Ms. Donaldson has to say go to http://www.connectingblack.com and read what she posted in the forums. SHE is a Hot Ghetto Mess!
We need to learn how to be ourselves, what we want the world to be…Positive lessons in INTROSPECTION is what needs be spread around..
SweetSong44…
As a race of humans, we have to “be” what we want our world to be…A Lesson in INTROSPECTION is what needs be spread around the world..”We’re a planet of 6 billion souls, living in a civilization designed by a few thousand deviates.” Yet so many of us still feel we have something to prove. We have nothing to prove to anyone but ourselves. What may mean being civilized to me, may not mean being civilized to you..So,lets not judge..Wisdom comes with time.
The world will always be somebody’s “metaphoric jizm” to which they feel the need to manipulate. Luckily for myself, I live in the real world which suggests life is definitely about balance. There will always be the positive and the negative. It is the very science that keeps this planet spinning..One just has to decide which part they are “not” willing to play leverage on, and get centered…
SweetSong44…
So the Exect. Producer James DuBose thought it would be a good idea to produce a show that brings down black people. Let alone that he hired a staff of white people to find negative and down right nasty things African American do to society. As a white-blackman, James Dubose should be ashamed of his work. All it shows is that he is a lazy man, who needs white people to make his work outstanding…..
BET is a disaster and its founder Ben Johnson great grand parents would turn over in their graves if they knew the monstrousity he built….Johnson said at one point he is in the business to make money….well he should he sold us out….that channel ceased being in my lexicon when Donnie and Video Soul left….they lost respect for Black folks by peddling the bullshit to us we dont need….make money? so fucking what crack sells that doesnt mean its good for you…at this point I would like to take my hat off to TVOne they showcase black entertainment from a mature and decent prospective…they show what we as black folk can be without being self-destructive or self-deprecating….
BET is pitiful. When I saw the advertisement for Allen Iverson’s mom, I just knew that they had hit an all time low. It’s shows like these that make White America think that ALL Blacks are ghetto, loud, aggressive, lazy, ignorant, etc. “Hot Ghetto Mess”, and the creators, and producers of this new show needs to be shot. To top it all off, even though BET is owned by a white man, I’m sure the writers are black. The one other issue I have with BET is the music videos(MTV, and VHI included also) these videos promote sexual promiscuity, bisexuality, light-skin is in syndrome, idol worship of jewelery, clothing, cars, alcohol, and drugs. I mean, yes for some it is entertaining, but for a dumb ass who has no knowledge of self it is a way of life. Peace
Maybe I’m the minority here…but I had to take a hard long look at BET and it’s choices of programming..please read my whole statement before you judge…I am all for the upliftment of our culture..and I would like you to keep in mind that BET has shows that are not negative..don’t believe me?..look at Black Carpet,One night only,Lil JJ’s show,Lil Romeo’s show,Cousin Jeff, all the commercials raising awareness about the Aids epidemic in our community,Bobby Jones Gospel,Vote or Die..think about it..Uncut was ridiculous..and BET got rid of it..and I’m sure HGM will not air for long….but all we look at are the videos..If you want strictly positivity all the time…I don’t know what to tell you..no station will give you that because media is trash period..but we overlook the positives in BET and instead look at the negative..BET is not and never has been ALL positive..no channel has..now I don’t like the idea of Hot Ghetto Mess at all…but American Gangster..I watched that and in my opinion..it didn’t glorify anything..it just showed the realities of that lifestyle..which is far different than what rappers that claim that lifestyle talk about…We need to teach our children and not let BET teach them..then we won’t have to worry about that..the only thing that can tear down our community is ourselves…if we allow it..I would like to suggest to stop throwing blame to the media if we’re allowing our children to watch it..we should be responsible for our own..

I think as Afikans we need to realize that no one is going to educate our children but us. I do not watch BIT (Black Ignorant Televison) and I will not allow my daughter to watch it. We know BET is owned by whites who are not doing anything, but what they have been doing for years. That is explorting Afikan people. So, Afrikan people lets please wake up. Also, even on MTV they do not explort white youth and white women as they allow on BIT.
I think this is a horrible concept for a show. It’s absolutely ridiculous! I sure hope that producer wasn’t black, but it’s stupid enough that a white person would say that. Ughh.
I think “Hot Ghetto Mess” is a horrible concept for a show because it’s perpetuating all these stereotypes about black people. Also, white people and people of other races are watching it, and some of those people are the same people who don’t know one black person. They don’t have black friends; they don’t live around black people; they haven’t even talked to a black person! These images are filling the minds of black people, poisoning their minds, AND they’re poisoning the minds of other Americans who believe the images they’re viewing. They’ll view black people in that manner, and that’s very disappointing and sad.
WHAT!!! did he say “all about black culture!!??” (SIGH) im not even going to comment on this one cus im sure it wont be pretty…….
I cannot believe the audacity of BET! This foolishness HAS to be stopped. I’m really at a loss for words…
It wouldn’t surprise me if BET was putting down the black community. Take for example how blacks put themselves down by using ghetto-talk like “sistah” when talking to another black woman–in this case, blacks are insulting themselves because they’re playing into that stereotype about blacks that says, “You blacks are uneducated & of a lower species & you can see it in how you talk”. I was just on the BET website looking over the forums are, where I saw several peoples posts making reference to black women as “sistaz” and even using ghetto-talk in referring to a persons rear-end by calling it a “booty”–I don’t feel that *avoiding* the use of English in an English speaking country is wise. People need to be able to communicate with *everyone*, not just “blacks who also use ghetto-talk”–”using ghetto-talk only “segregates” oneself from society (and I bet alot of racists would like us “segregated” into our own place!)–so, they shouldn’t “fall for this trap” by using such language. Speak English people–we live in an English speaking country–this isn’t the “bush” or the “jungle” so *stop* acting as if it is.
I stopped lookin at bet along time ago, i saw were it was headed and tried to let others know. sometimes it good to act early rather than late. Nevertheless, i support the move will let others know what your doing. i’m attempting to put up a blog now. you may contact me, for further action
It’s time for a lot of things to cease, in our community, don’t stop at one, let kick our all the trash.
Much Luv,Respect & Blessings!
FYI the “supervising” producer of the show is a hog faced white broad who’s about as black (and smart) as K-Fed singing gospel. Not THAT’S a mess…
1. The show from my understanding is called hot ghetto MESS!!! Not Hot Ghetto WONDERFUL.
2. The Ghetto and ghetto like material possessions and attributes are a huge aspect of the black community.
3. By Exposing that, Questioning that and Raising Awareness by holding a MIRROR to this aspect of the black community may bring CHANGE. That I believe is the intention of the show.
4. By IGNORING and being in DENIAL about this aspect of black culture is only creating MORE OF IT.
5. So seriously, you should focus more effort and attention on the PARENTS , MUSIC VIDEOS THAT ALL HAVE GIRLS AND GUNS, ETC ETC and not on a show that is trying to raise awarensess of the negative aspects of black culture. I’m sorry, I’m black and black people deserve critism for their actions as much as anyone else does when they are wrong.
Jeez I know you have good intentions but you also fail to mention the show is called “HOT GHETTO MESS: We’ve got to do it better”
I think many people have the right idea by trying to stop shows that degrade the black comunity. It is true in many midwestern parts of America there are no blacks and all the population has to go on is what they see in the media. Also in more black populated areas when all that is shown on media is that sterio type children will naturally follow it in a atempt to find their place.
While the media is one of your biggest problems you cant only blame them. The reason there is a steriotype in the first place of black people being ghetto is because ALOT OF BLACK PEOPLE ARE GHETTO. I am trully sorry for a strong black man or woman who is steriotyped because of his brothers actions. You as a people should constantly think of how to stop this horrible steriotype because alot of my race watches you closley and often looks at any black person though a filter made by the media. I also understand that many black people who live in the ghetto sometimes dont want to fit the description but dont have many other options. I was born in the ghetto too, my family has sold drugs before to get by, if you have to do it, i dont judge you. But there is nothing glorious about being the dope man! Selling drugs shouldnt be a luxury, but only a necesety in the most extreme points. If you have to carry a gun to protect yourself i have no reason to judge you. But there is nothing glorious about shooting another human!
Stop watching BET,MTV, and other shows by viacom. Read a book! Do something proactive. Stop fighting eachother! Men (of all races) if you make a child and dont help raise it, you are no man. Any fuck up can be a dad but it takes a real ass man to be a parent. Women(of all races again) Dont let yourself be exploited. Black women are being degraded across the country and the worst part is alot of women are letting it happen or even helping it!
Finally I am sorry it comes down to this but most of america are ignorant hypocrites. They dont give a shit about this petition or this damn forum. They might talk about rights but bet you they ass is sitting in the house watching one of viacoms programs. The only way to change is by actually taking action, everyone here is talking big, but how many of you will go through with it when you get out of your computer chair and how many will sit in there living room and watch the idiot box?
And as a white male i will probably recieve alot of hate for talking about the black comunity this way. Call me a racist if you want but i was born in the ghetto and raised around blacks. Im am not a steriotype and i am not trying to be black. I am just trying to help people. Not just blacks or whites. I am helping human beings.
Gotta love that last line “all about black culture”. I know I do. So! You want to know what black culture is according to the working-for-blacks-peoples-best-interest cultural heroes at BET? $10,000 spinners on a Yugo. *Lights torch, grabs pitchfork* What in the hell is going on here? As is other races don’t already think of us as being ghetto idiots. See a show like this has two goals in my mind. (1) Reinforce to non-black America that blacks are ignorant, petty, and stupid. (2) Tell black America that they ARE ignorant, petty, and stupid because other black people on YOUR BET are saying so. With an angle on comedy, one thing about comedy, when ideas are presented in a comedic manner people accept them 200% more. Why do you think South Park, whenever they make some point (more recently the nigger guy episode which I thought was hilarious) it makes CNN news and a big whoop-de-do is made about it? Because they are funny with it, so more people accept it, even though other people for years and years have been saying the same exact thing. So now this show “with an angle on comedy” stands to do all kinds of damage not only to the image non-black America has of black people, but to the image black Americans have of themselves, young and old. People say that the youth are the most important thing, I agree. Television like this considerably poisons the minds of white, black, latino, and everyother race of young people in America. Because to be honest people get older, MOST of the time, well maybe I’ll say I’d hope they would grow out of BET and MTV. Unfortunatly parents are letting the TV raise the younger generation in a lot of cases. Even when I was in school, kids, black and white would ask me, and we would ask each other “you see that new music video on BET, MTV, whatever whatever” My mother never allowed me and my sister to watch BET and even when we would sneak and watch it, I never really liked it.
Hi. I be a fan of dem Hot Ghetto Mess folks cuz I think dat they wills shows me how I can be smarter and shit. By watching dem other colored folks I will learn about dem things dat make us blackies bad likes wearing funny clothes and talking silly, and having funny clothes, and answering questions wrong and shit by some kat who willz educate me. I am surz that dem whities will like us alls better and not usez it to builds their eracism agenda and laugh at us afrikan amerikkans. I be so glad dat Hot ghetto mess iz all abouts dem education and nots making money. I am sures that dem producers and dat website & Bet willz be giving all dat money backs to us in da black community and dat dey won’t be spending it and shit on dem selves. I dink iz is a great ideas there be some fat whitey chik in charges of de shows and shitz. I am sures shes cans easily take its upon herselves tooz commentz on de whole black race cuz she’s muss be real smartz
BET alone is racist. If white people had “WET” they’d be crying racism.
It’s about EQUAL, NOT EXTRA rights.
It’s 2007, not the 1907. Time to stop griping.
I can’t really blame the producers for wanting to cash in on this idea (of course they are scumbags). The thing is, when you start with shit (the website) you’re certain to end with shit (the tv show). It’s a stretch to take any of this as social commentary. We’re talking about stupid pictures/video of people at weddings, shitting themselves drunk, and acting silly. But it’s very easy to see how this could damage the black community, just by association with these negatives alone. If anything, I’d be ashamed to work on the show, not only because website founder Jam comes across to me as insincere about the real motivation, $$ (come on, she’s a LAWYER) but if there really is a “white broad” in charge of the show, what kind of social commentary are we really exploring? Bottom line, I pity anybody associated with this garbage.
BET is responsible for poisoning the minds of naive youth in this country. BET is a venue through which attractive images of an unrealistic standard wealth and status are flaunted to disenfranchised teenagers. These ubiqitious images become the hallmark of the status quo. Young black kids begin to feel worthless because they can’t afford the meaningless material commodities endorsed by this mindless, self-indulgent rap culture. What is even worse is that these gangsta rappers, who are featured everyday on BET, strongly encourage black youth to engage in a life of hustling and drug dealing through their ignorant song lyrics. Collectively, people need to make a stand and fight to change the programming on networks like BET. The music industry needs a massive facelift as well. Before rap music became a massive commercial success in the 80s and early 90s, rappers cursed alot less and actually spoke about issues that everyone could universally relate to.
Advertisers Flee Website Promoting Latest BET Show, “ Hot Ghetto Mess”
July 2, 2007– Early indications are that advertisers want nothing to do with Black Entertainment Television’s latest venture into original programming, a show called “Hot Ghetto Mess.” State Farm and Home Depot ordered BET to take their ads off of a page on BET.com promoting the show .
The promotional page for the show features a blackface cartoon and says that “Hot Ghetto Mess is like the traffic accident you can’t look away from.”
The blog, What About Our Daughters?, and the National Congress of Black Women asked advertisers to remove advertising form BET’s “ Hot Ghetto Mess” promotional page,. Less than twenty-four hours later, BET was forced to remove prominent banner ads which had flashed advertising for State Farm, The Home Depot, Yum Brand’s KFC, Target, AT&T, and Daimler Chrysler. Both State Farm and The Home Depot said that BET had erred by placing their company’s ads on the “ Hot Ghetto Mess” site without their knowledge or permission.
“As a result of a technical issue with their ad-server, BET inadvertently placed our ads within areas of their site that we did not specify,” said Christi Tricoli, Media Manager for the Home Depot.
State Farm was just as quick to demand that BET remove the company’s advertising from the page. According to Edward Gold, Advertising Director for State Farm, “Hot Ghetto Mess” does not meet the company’s advertising guidelines and objectives and the company wants no association with the program.
”We have reviewed the content of this program, which we just heard about, and we will NOT be airing any State Farm advertising during this program on BET. We have also directed our agency to have BET.com remove any State Farm advertising to appear on the web page on BET.com,” Gold said in an email to the blog, What About Our Daughters?
Protests and petitions aimed at getting the show pulled before its debut on July 25th have popped up all over the internet , but BET has not relented to the outrage surrounding the show. BET continues to solicit videos and photos from viewers. Viewers are encouraged to send in photos and clips of people who look, sound and appear “bad “ and “ugly according to BET.com. The show will be hosted by Charlie Murphy and according to the “Hot Ghetto Mess” promotions site, the show will guide viewers through “shaking booties, thug life, baby-mama drama and pimped-out high schoolers.”
“If I was an advertiser, I’d think long and hard about subsidizing a show whose sole purpose is to hold African Americans up for scorn, ridicule, and contempt,” said Gina, the creator of What About Our Daughters?. “ I can’t imagine a company who would want to be associated with something called “ Hot Ghetto Mess” and whose logo is a blackface cartoon,” she said.
What About Our Daughters is a blog dedicated to combating negative portrayals of African American women in popular culture.
I’m looking forward to the show, especially since the two lame ass producers were fired, H and S, you know who I’m talking about. Ha! Ha! Now it might actually be funny.
